Bodyguards + Workplace + One Night Stand = All the Heat

Happily Ever Maybe, a Montgomery Ink Legacy novella from New York Times bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan is now live!

It was only supposed to be one job.

I know the rules.
Get in. Get out.
Protect the girl, then move on.
Only it never works out the way it should.
Now Jennifer and I work with each other and there’s no going back to normal.

Then it turned into something more.

Gus isn’t for me. I know that.
Only the chemistry that burns between us won’t fade away.
We promise it will only be one night.
Then another.
But when our actions have consequences that could mean the end of our future, we’ll have to figure out exactly what we want.
Even if it means walking away broken before it begins.

But for some reason, I was edgy now.
No, that was a lie. It wasn’t just some reason. I knew exactly what it was.
And it wasn’t Daisy and Kane, my fellow team members today. No, it was the other one.
Her.
I didn’t want to think about her, but I wasn’t sure I could stop. I needed to, however. My job demanded it.
I was a bodyguard and an installer. I not only protected my clients and charges, I also installed security equipment for businesses and homes. While my bosses laid out the security profiles and programs for large corporations and small residences—and also worked with cybersecurity—I did the installs when I wasn’t on bodyguard duty. I enjoyed both aspects of my job and was talented at it.
Yet it didn’t feel like that.
Not with her.
It was always hard to think about anything when it came to Jennifer. My coworker and my nemesis. Not that she knew she was my nemesis. No, that was all on me.
Those blue-gray eyes of hers were piercing and saw everything. At least when it came to the job. She could scent an incoming threat as quickly as I could, and that was saying something. I might be cocky as fuck when it came to my job, but it was for a reason.
And Jennifer was sometimes even better.
Her dark brown hair was pulled into a tight bun away from her face. I liked it when her hair was down, though, since it fell in soft waves past her shoulders. She pulled it back in a ponytail or a braid when she was working out, but when she was on duty, like today, it was in a bun, so nobody could use it against her in a fight.
I always kept my hair decently short, but my beard was getting longer. I’d probably have to trim it soon. I wasn’t trying to blend in like I had with my old job when everybody had long beards, and I was undercover. Now, I needed to trim it a bit so nobody could pull it in a fight.
But Jennifer? She’d thought about all of that already. Hence the bun.
She was slim with a narrow waist and average height—though not much about her was average. But that delicate frame was all muscle. She could bench press more than a few of the guys on the team and kick any of our asses on any given day. Hell, she’d pinned me to the ground once, and I nearly swallowed my tongue. And then I’d had to hide my erection from her. Like I did most days. Because Jennifer was a distraction.
My distraction.

He settled his free hand on her other shoulder and she leaned into his protective grasp. “You deserve better,” he said in a husky voice. “You should have people in your life you can trust.”
She swallowed hard at the sincerity in his voice, pushing back the lump in her throat. It wasn’t often she let herself think about what she was missing in her life. It wouldn’t do her any good. Her focus had always been on looking ahead and making sure she held tight to whatever convictions she could. Like standing firm against her parents’ desire for her to date and marry Preston.
“I have my grandmother. She knows where I am and she’d never say a word,” she murmured. “I have my sister. And now I have you.”
His eyes opened wide, his surprise evident. She understood. She wasn’t sure what had possessed her to include him in her tiny circle, but her gut told her it was true. He’d given her a place to stay, allowed her to help at the bar he managed, let her paint in his house, and most importantly, he’d kept Preston away. Not to mention, he’d threatened him on her behalf.
Yes, she could trust Maddox James.
She also wanted him. Wanted him to kiss her without reservation this time. Wanted to see his muscled, sexy body naked and aroused for her, and to feel his warmth on her skin.
She wanted him to take her virginity.
There was so much he could show her, teach her, and make her feel. Though she knew, even if she convinced Maddox to let himself go, this thing between them could only be temporary. He’d already listed his reasons he wasn’t right for her.
Even if she knew he was wrong.
Despite the obstacles, Gabby wouldn’t be deterred. She met his hooded gaze and saw the desire in his eyes. He was feeling the same need.
“Maddox? Are you going to push me away again?” she asked in a whisper.
A long moment passed, and she waited, anxious and nervous. She couldn’t handle another rejection, but she’d never regret putting herself out there. She sensed he’d be worth it.
A low growl sounded from inside him and he finally caved, lowering his head, his mouth inches from hers. “I want you, Gabby.”

I drop my phone into my pocket and grab my suitcase’s handle to turn around.

“Hey, watch—” I hear him too late and crash into the man trying to warn me with a thud that knocks the wind out of me and pushes me back onto my heels. I windmill my arms to try and correct my balance but cry out as it proves in vain and my body teeters backward. I brace myself for a fall.

Instead, an arm wraps around my waist and I find myself staring into the mirrored lenses of a dark pair of Ray-Bans.

Even with his eyes hidden and his face covered in sweat he’s easily one of the most handsome men I’ve ever seen in person. He’s got a mouth most women would envy and a nose that belongs in a museum. His pores are amazing. I need to find out what he uses on his skin.

“Are you alright?” he asks, still hovering over me, still holding me up as if I weighed nothing.

“Yes.” I cough to clear the husk from my voice. “I’m sorry I wasn’t watching where I was going.”

“I was,” he murmurs.

“You were…watching where I was going?”

“No. Where I was going. So, I saw you. Caught you.” The heat from his hand seeps through the thin fabric of my sundress.

I can’t see his eyes but I swear I can feel them on my face and I don’t like that I can’t see him.

And that’s my cue to end this little…whatever it is.

“Can you let me up?” I press my hands to his chest.

“Oh.” He starts as if he didn’t realize he was holding me.
“Yes, sorry.” He straightens and lets me go. But the heat from his touch doesn’t.

“Thanks for breaking my fall. I’m Cassie.” I give a lame wave.

He flashes an unfairly perfect grin. “Nice to meet you. How long are you here?”

“All week. I’m working at the resort. You?” I ask as he starts to jog in place and glances at his watch.

“Two weeks. At least. So…maybe I’ll see you around?”

“Sure. What’s your name?”

“They call me Wild Card.” He winks and runs off.

Oh shit. I’ve already fucked up. Well at least I know who to avoid.

“I glance over my shoulder and watch him run away, his back muscles a thing of art and perfection, and sigh. “What a waste.”

Release Day Blitz…Christmas In Cape May by Jennifer Probst

She’s a beach town flower shop owner who loves Christmas.
He’s the hot new restaurant owner with a grumpy Grinch heart.

Christmas in Cape May, an all-new steamy Sunshine Sisters novella from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst, is available now!

Devon Pratt loves many things in life. The beauty of flowers. The yin and yang of energy. The power of positivity in people. And everything to do with the Christmas season.

As a floral shop owner in the beach town of Cape May, she looks forward to decorating both the town and running the annual holiday party to benefit the local animal shelter. Too bad the new owner of her favorite venue is more like the Grinch than Santa. Working with him will be a challenge, but she’s too full of seasonal cheer to let him annoy her, right?

Jameson Franklin hates many things in life. Crowds. Fake cheer. Ostentatious décor. And especially Christmas. The season is full of things he’d rather avoid, but since taking over the popular restaurant Vintage temporarily for his cousin as a favor, he’s trying to play nice with the locals. Too bad the florist is insisting on overrunning his sacred space with blooms, dogs, and an endless positive persistence that pushes all of his buttons. But when too many heated confrontations lead to heated encounters, he begins to wonder what it would be like to love not only Christmas, but Devon Pratt.

Let the festivities begin.

She took a few steps in and jabbed her finger in the air. “You wouldn’t know how to handle a day at my shop, restaurant boy. And cancelling on a charity two weeks before the event is bad business in whatever way you want to look at it. I refuse to let you ruin this town’s tradition because you want to line your pocket with a few extra bucks. I don’t care what I have to do. You will honor the agreement and hold the gala here or I will make you sorely regret it.”
The words shot and floated through the room like post-gunfire. A slight trembling shook her body from the depth of her emotions, and she dully noted it had been a long time since any individual—male or female—brought out her full ire. Devon braced herself for the fight of the century.
“Restaurant boy?”
The droll amusement only notched her temper higher. “I mean it. I will help you do this but you have a responsibility to keep your damn word.”
The man had the audacity to lean back in his chair with ease and regard her under lashes that were too thick for a male. “And if I don’t?”
Devon realized she’d make a bigger impression if she was like him.
Cold-hearted, methodical, and ruthless.
“I know people.”
Interest piqued in those storm cloud eyes. “Mob?”
“No. Legal people. Wouldn’t it be a shame to try and make productive changes and have to deal with customer complaints regarding the food? Or sanitary conditions?” She clucked her tongue. “Mac just got his liquor license. I bet you’d make a pretty penny selling your fancy Manhattan cocktails here. Wouldn’t it be a shame if something happened to that liquor license?”
“You really like dogs, don’t you?”
She narrowed her gaze and tried to figure him out. He was so damn…perplexing. Devon expected anger, or some other type of boorish behavior. Instead, he acted like he was royalty who refused to show weakness or emotion. Unfortunately, it only made her want to stir him up a bit to see where his limits were.
“Dogs are the bomb. They deserve a little happiness before being returned to their cages without a family for Christmas.”
And then something amazing happened.
He laughed.
Sure, it was a chuckle, and not a full-blown chest laugh, but the sound ruffled her nerve endings and made her want to remember it so she could replay the scene later in her head. “Okay, flower girl. I’ll give you what you want because I have limited time to deal with your threats but I have no time to structure this event. I’ll serve local beer and wine. I’ll offer up a limited menu based on my choices. That’s it. You do everything else and there will be no interference with the lunch crowd. The event begins at six pm, and I serve till 4pm. That means, no early drop-offs or distractions for my staff.”
She opened her mouth to say something but he kept going.
“And if I need anything, I plan to call you and only you. The moment you don’t respond, I’m calling the whole thing off, and you can blame the dogs’ broken hearts on your inability to follow through. Understood?”
“Flower girl?”
He grinned and her stomach did another weird flip. Something about those lips distracted her. “Tit for tat. Now, I need to get back to work.”
This time, he turned around and began tapping at his keyboard.
She’d already been dismissed.
Head spinning, unable to come up with a proper retaliation, Devon left, wondering if she’d won the battle only to have lost the war.
Because dealing with that man for the next two weeks was going to be hell on Earth.

Release Day Blitz & Review…Darkest Need by Rachel Van Dyken

To touch a Dark One is certain death…to fall in love with one of them might just be your salvation.

Darkest Need, an all-new page-turning Dark Ones novella from New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken, is available now!

I see everything. I feel everything.
I watch people fall in love. I watch them burn with hate, anger, rage, and I see the cycle repeat over and over again. I take it on every night I work at Timber, aka Anubis’s bar in downtown Seattle, and then I help the rest of the immortals keep the very intense balance between Heaven and Earth.

I see everyone’s future but mine, and when I try to look, all I see is darkness, despair, need…

Until she walks into my bar with bruises on her face, getting pulled by one of the lesser demons. I do what any good bartender would do… I beat him within an inch of his life and turn my eyes to her.
By then, it’s too late.
She already has me in her grasp.
A succubus that has no other plan than to suck me clean of every inch of power that’s been bestowed on me by the Heavens.

I never thought my future involved getting kidnapped and tied up or that I’d die by way of sex—then again, maybe that’s for the best. Dying at the hands of my enemy rather than being one more burden to my already mated friends.

After all, giving into one last need before death, while selfish, may be exactly what my darkness means.

My need is great.
And she’s about to find out just how much.

Listen, I know I have chains wrapped strategically around my wrists and that every second that goes by, said chains are burning a mark into my skin that may or may not mean I’m about to get completely demolished by a succubus demon.
But this is not how the story starts.
I mean, maybe it’s how it ends since I’ve been in this exact spot for the last two days without food or water, waiting for a rescue from my immortal friends, knowing full well they’re probably all just having sex and enjoying marital bliss without realizing I’m actually missing.
Me.
The manager of the Seattle demon bar, Sin.
Werewolf prince.
All around really upright kind of guy—or so I like to think. But do you know where that got me?
Here.
Chained.
See also: Demon goddess who has not come back to check on me even once and says she wants to kill me via sex.
Bartending is looking great right now. Immortal life in my werewolf clan did not prepare me for this or the fact that saving one succubus would actually turn me into her prey.
She was bruised.
Beaten beyond recognition.
I was going to kill the vampire that attempted to slaughter her, but that’s a longer, more violent story since she ended up doing the deed once she got a bit of my blood. But I did give her water, thinking, wow, I’ve done this person a total solid. I mean, despite the fact that she was pretty. Even her tears were pretty. The bruising and swelling on her face didn’t even hide how beautiful she was—or is.
Maybe my first wrong act was comforting her. Because the minute we touched, her eyes flashed a creepy red, and well…see also actual burning handcuffs around my wrists.
It’s clearly been a fun forty-eight hours. Maybe she’ll make it quick, though a weird part of me kind of wants my last few moments being sucked dry via sex to last for a while, so long that it’s all I focus on, all I care about, all I see.
I see visions of the future, but I never saw this.
So, strap in because I’m sure it’s going to be a great story. I just may not make it all the way to the end with you.

I devoured this quickly and thoroughly enjoyed this one.

If you have read any of RVD’s previous books in this series (The Dark Ones), you will absolutely love this novella. For new readers to this series, certain things may seem a bit confusing and feel overwhelmed, but just keep reading.

I absolutely loved Tarek & Lilith’s story. It was exactly what I needed.

New readers will get an idea on how all these characters relate to one another and because you will see how the secondary characters care for him, you get an idea of who he is. Lilith is bit harder to connect to but Rachel does a fairly good job of explaining her purpose.

Overall, a nice novella introducing all the characters in this series and supporting Tarek and his story.

Release Day Blitz…The Grave Robber by Darynda Jones

He knows the exact moment she will die and he will risk everything to stop it…
even his life.

The Grave Robber, an all-new steamy paranormal novella set in the Charley Davidson world from New York Times bestselling author
Darynda Jones, is available now!

Eric Vause is done.

Done with ghosts. Done with hellhounds. And definitely done with asshole demons, mostly because he’d been possessed by one. Even now, five years later, the rage he absorbed from the creature has yet to wane, so he decides a road trip is in order. Surely some cool air, great scenery, and a case of Dos Equis will shake things loose. Unfortunately, supernatural events happen everywhere. When he meets up with a friend whose partner’s daughter needs help with a pest problem—aka, a ghost—Eric takes that as his cue to leave.

Until he sees her.

He can tell Halle’s house isn’t the only thing that is haunted. The hopelessness behind her eyes tugs at something deep inside him. Something all too familiar. The fact that she’s the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen has nothing to do with his change of heart. And he vows to leave her in his rearview the minute he takes care of the poltergeist. Then again, vows were never his strong suit.

“What do the notes say?”
She pulled her lower lip between her teeth, stalling. She stalled some more when she said, “I can’t always read them.”
“Halle,” I warned.
Her shoulders deflated as she released a surrendering sigh. “At first, they were just numbers. They started right after my mom died. The number twelve kept popping up. But a month later, it changed to an eleven. Then a ten. Then a nine.”
“A countdown.”
“Yes. Every month for the last year, he’s been counting down. And now we’re at number two.” She leveled an accusing gaze on me. “And you’ve known since the first time you laid eyes on me.”
“Not the first time,” I said, slightly offended. “What makes you think they’re death threats? They could mean anything.”
“Because the other note he leaves is pretty explicit. It’s just one word. Payback.”
Ah. Now we were getting somewhere. “Halle, what happened seventeen years ago? What changed your life so dramatically? And who wants payback?”
She shook her head and looked away, tears shimmering in her eyes.
I leaned onto my elbows and put a hand over hers. “Halle, I know this is hard, but please trust me.”
“It’s not that. It’s not that I don’t trust you. You’ve earned that and then some. But if I tell you what happened, what I did, you won’t want to have sex with me anymore.”
I almost snorted. Clearly, she didn’t understand the male thought process.
But I needed to chill. I was pushing her too hard. I wanted her to bend. Not break.
The furball started whimpering at her feet. Halle picked her up, nuzzled her, then set her in the box she’d brought along with a dry towel from the bathroom. With a full belly, the furball settled immediately and went to sleep.
Halle straightened and walked over to stand in front of me. “Is that a yes?”
“No,” I said, taking in every curve she had to offer. She smelled sweet, like jasmine. “It’s a hell yes.” I put a hand on her hip, the heat from her body soaking into my skin as she straddled me.
With hesitant fingers, she tested the abrasion on my jaw. “Are you sure this is okay? You were hit by a truck yesterday.”
“I was sideswiped by a truck. Huge difference.”
She nodded and grew thoughtful as though making calculations in her head. Now was not the time for math.
“I’m pretty sure you’re a supernatural being,” she said, completely serious. “That you’re not real and will disappear as soon as all of this is over.”
“I have several friends who are supernaturally inclined. I am not one of them. And I’m not going anywhere.”
She buried her fingers in my hair and covered my mouth with hers. I’d never welcomed a kiss more in my life.

“Listen, I know we don’t get along—despite this little moment of truce. You don’t have to do this.”
“It’s true, you drive me crazy. But that doesn’t mean I can’t be neighborly.” He pushes his hand through his hair in agitation. This is the Zeke I know. “Maybe we can work out a trade.”
I take a step back, appalled. “No.”
“Jesus, not that kind of trade, although you’re hot as fuck, and I wouldn’t complain.”
I’m pretty sure my jaw just hit the floor. Zeke thinks I’m hot?
“I was thinking that maybe you could put a hold on the nagging while I offer you my hot water.”
“I don’t nag.”
He laughs and rubs his fingertips into his forehead like he’s completely frustrated.
“You nag more than my grandmother, and that woman could have won an Olympic gold medal if it were a sport.”
“What do I nag you about?” I prop my hands on my hips and narrow my eyes at him.
“What don’t you nag me about?” He shakes his head. “’Turn the music down, Zeke. Stop laughing so loud, Zeke. Jesus, Zeke, when was the last time you checked your mail? It’s overflowing in your box. Zeke, you parked like crap again.’ I’m telling you, I get real sick and tired of my name.”
I can only blink at him. Do I really sound like that? Do I bitch at him constantly?
“Well.” I sound stiff as a board, but I can’t help it. I’m mortified. “I will stop doing that. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. And thank you for the offer, but I’ll pass. I can go to my parents’ house. I appreciate your help tonight. Have a nice evening.”
He frowns. “Now, you just sound like you have a stick up your ass.”
“What do you want from me?” It comes out in an exasperated shout. “Christ Jesus, Zeke, have you ever considered that I nag because you do those things all the goddamn time, and it’s inconsiderate? No, I’m sure you haven’t. You just think I’m a tight-ass bitch who likes the sound of my own voice, not a human being who has jobs and responsibilities of her own. But it’s fine. I’ll keep my mouth shut from here on out and suck it up. I’ll invest in some noise-blocking earbuds and park in the visitor parking so I don’t have to deal with your shitty parking jobs. I really do appreciate you being so nice to me tonight. It was a pleasant surprise, but I won’t expect it to continue. See you around.”
“God, you’re so damn exasperating.”
“Same goes, Zeke.”
We just stand there for several seconds, breathing hard and glaring at each other, and then the next thing I know, Zeke closes the gap between us, cups my face in his hands, and kisses me.
Like, kisses me.
It’s hot and demanding, as if he’s been thinking about doing it since the minute we met, and he has months-and-months-worth of pent-up sexual aggression to get out.
And, surprisingly, I don’t mind at all.

Release Day Blitz & Review…The Dandelion Diary by Devney Perry

“She was captivating.
Breathtaking.
Stunning.
Surprising.
Tempting.
And Katy’s teacher.”

The Dandelion Diary, an all-new heartwarming Maysen Jar novella from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Devney Perry is available now!

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Devney Perry comes a new story in her Maysen Jar series…

Dear Diary,

My dad needs a girlfriend, and I’ve already picked her out.

Miss Adler would be perfect for him, right? She’s super pretty. She has the best smile and she gives the best hugs. And she’s, like, the most amazing teacher in the world.

Dad is my hero, but I can tell he’s lonely. He tries to hide it from me, but sometimes at night, when he thinks I’m asleep, I’ll sneak downstairs and find him sitting on the couch, staring at nothing. He’s never had a girlfriend, not since the divorce. Mom messed him up. She’s good at that.

He’s smart and funny, but he doesn’t laugh enough. I’ve seen other moms at school check him out so I guess he’s handsome. (Eww.) And he makes up the best nicknames. He calls me Dandelion. I bet he’d give Miss Adler an awesome nickname too.

They’re perfect for each other. I just know it. Now I only have to show them I’m right.

Wish me luck.

Katy

Jeff stopped just beyond the patio, turning to face me.
I stopped too, standing just within arm’s reach.
He reached up, tucking a lock of hair behind my ear. “I’m stalling.”
“You’re stalling.”
“You gotta tell me what you want. It’s your job. It’s your life. You want to wait until summer, then I’ll walk you to your car right now.”
I inched closer. More of that bravery bubbled to the surface. Was this a stupid idea? Yep. So why couldn’t I leave? “What if I don’t want to go to my car?”
A growl came from his chest as he dragged a hand over his jaw. “You’re sure?”
“Is Katy asleep?”
He nodded once. “Out like a light.”
“Then I want you to kiss me.”
The words were barely out of my mouth before his lips crushed mine, his strong arms sweeping me off my feet as he hauled me into his chest.
Yes. Whatever doubts I had vanished. I melted against him, sinking into the feel of those lips against mine. Never in my life had I been this bold. Never in my life had I told a man to kiss me.
Worth it. So fucking worth it.
His tongue swept against the seam of my lips, demanding entry. A mewl escaped my throat as he slid inside. Then he plundered, fluttering and tangling and swirling his tongue with mine until I was breathless.
This man could kiss. Thank the stars in the sky, he could kiss.
He nipped at the corner of my mouth, then sucked my bottom lip between his teeth. He slanted over me, delving deeper, leaving no corner of my mouth untouched.
My entire body went up in flames, my pulse thudding in time with the aching throb in my core. When he broke us apart, my lips were swollen. He latched on to my neck, sucking and kissing as he left a trail down the column of my throat.
“More.” I fisted the material of his shirt, holding him to me.
“Fuck, Della.” His voice held an edge of restraint, like he was trying to press the brakes. He pulled back, setting me on my feet. His eyes searched mine and his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard. Then he shifted, taking a step away.
No. “Don’t,” I panted.
Maybe it was the years of rejection from Luka. Maybe it was this all-consuming need for Jeff’s touch, his skin against mine. If I had to beg, I’d beg. Tonight, I wanted to be craved. Worshiped. And if that kiss was any indication, together, we could be dynamite.
“Della—”
“Please don’t pull away from me.” There was a vulnerability in my voice that surprised even me.
Jeff’s eyes softened. “I don’t want to, beautiful. But if I don’t put this space between us, I’m not sure I’ll be able to let you go.”
The air rushed from my lungs. He wants me. Deep down, I knew he wanted me. That kiss was a kiss from a man who wanted a woman. But to hear the need in his voice, well…it meant I didn’t care about the rules. Not tonight.
I’d risk it all, just once.
“You said I had to tell you what I want,” I said. “And that’s you. Kiss me again. Take me inside to your bedroom. Or if all you want to do is sit at the table and play cribbage with me, I’ll take whatever I can get. We don’t even know each other but the idea of me leaving right now…” I shook my head. “I don’t want to leave.”

This is how you write a novella!!!

The Dandelion Diary is a novella in Devney’s Maysen Jar series and part of the 1,001 Dark Nights 2023 collection.

If you’re a dummy like me and haven’t read any of the books in this series, this is the perfect book to get a peak into this perfect small town. And it’s also a perfect way to get a glimpse into Devney’s phenomenal writing.

I cannot rave enough about this novella. It’s set in this quaint small-town and has adorable little stores. The Dandelion Diary features a divorced, single dad and he’s incredibly sweet daughter and his daughter’s teacher. Yep – a forbidden romance.

Jeff helps manage a local landscaping business and his main focus has always been his daughter, Katy, whom he also calls Dandelion. I absolutely love the father-daughter relationship between these two.

Della Adler is Katy’s school teacher. She and Jeff have a meeting one day at Katy’s school after Katy has a bad day and there’s this immediate connection between one another. And from there – things take off.

There’s reason this is called The Dandelion Diary – and you must read this one to find out why. The ending had me smiling the biggest smile.

Definitely a must read!!!

As soon as Trevor was alone, he exhaled, his entire body relaxing. He was being a selfish ass, and he knew he shouldn’t have come by, especially not without calling first.
He had a solid friendship going with Ollie, and he didn’t want to ruin it because he was acting like a schoolboy who didn’t know how to handle a crush.
But he did have a crush. And if he didn’t dial it back, he was going to ruin a friendship he truly valued.
Ollie was straight. Or if he wasn’t, he wanted to be. He’d had a lifelong crush on Nikki Stark, which everyone knew. Trevor was pretty sure he’d slept with Jamie at some point. And he knew that Ollie had been engaged to a woman named Courtney.
Straight. The guy was straight.
Even if there was a thread of queer in Ollie’s blood, he’d spent a lifetime either ignoring or suppressing it. The man was a good friend. That was all.
Trevor needed to get that through his thick head. And the sooner he did, the better.
Too bad his libido kept ignoring that very sound advice. Ollie had rung all his bells since the first time he’d met the attorney-turned-FBI-agent when their paths crossed back when poor Anne had been kidnapped. But their friendship had truly solidified not long ago at a party they’d both attended in honor of Jamie’s first starring role in Intercontinental.
By then, he’d been crushing hard, and it had only gotten more intense when Ollie had pulled him in to help on an FBI money laundering sting at the Mercury Club, a gay strip bar in LA. Trevor had wormed his way in as an actual stripper, and Ollie had posed as a customer. The operation had lasted a couple of weeks, and Trevor’d had plenty of time to watch Ollie in the audience. To see what he thought was a spark of interest in his friend’s eyes.
Maybe he’d been imagining it, but he didn’t think so. And that spark had lit a fire under his own desires, raising the heat from slow burn to full-on boil.
But real or not, Trevor knew damn well that Ollie was fighting it.
Honestly, crushing on a straight guy was a pain in the ass.
He could tell himself that forever, but it didn’t stop the tightening in his chest or the sparks of awareness that shot through him when Ollie returned carrying the folding chair. He was wearing paint-splattered jeans and a similarly stained white tee that did nothing to hide the fact that the guy was in great shape. He’d heard Jamie tease him for being skinny, but Trevor didn’t see it. Maybe before Trevor knew him, but if so, the guy had filled out. Ollie had always looked pretty damn delicious to him, with solid pecs, strong arms, and a tight ass that he really wanted to grab.
And so much for that whole dialing it back thing.

Here’s the thing—will Donovan fire me for using his discarded invites without his permission? No.
Will he reprimand me? Also, no.
Will he take advantage of my desire to attend these functions and put me to work at future events? No, probably not.
In fact, he’d probably pat me on the back while giving me one of his infamous smirks and tell me how to get a hold of his partners’ discarded invites as well. Donovan and I are two of a kind like that, which is the real reason he keeps me around, not my awesome PA skills. It’s not always easy to find company while walking semi-ethical lines.
But this is my thing. My thing that has nothing at all to do with who I am during office hours. It’s personal and private and sort of embarrassing, when I think about admitting it out loud, because it’s not just about getting free food. Hell’s Kitchen apartments take a fair amount of my salary, but Donovan pays well. I can afford to go out.
I just don’t really want to go eat solo in expensive restaurants.
People stare and whisper. Not that I care what they think, but it’s distracting. It’s much easier to be a solo at a business function. Maybe my plus one is involved in the actual event. Maybe they canceled, last minute. Maybe I’m there purely because of work, and no one whispers or stares or judges, and waiters don’t give me pitying comments, and strange men don’t (usually) take it as an opportunity to hit on me.
It’s a perfect hobby, as far as I’m concerned, and I’ll be damned if it’s taken away because of the hazel-eyed assface who sat at my table, who is the sole reason I’m out in the lobby at the same time Donovan is.
I have half a mind to turn around and go tear that too-hot-for-his-own-good fucker to shreds, and I would if my boss wasn’t looking at me like I’m a lifeline.
I quickly try to make up a backstory. “Uh, Donovan…I’m…” Try and fail. “Hi. You’re here.”
He waves to a security guard then points at me, which…okay. Maybe I was wrong thinking he wouldn’t be mad. He really doesn’t have to go so far as to bring security in.
But though the guard is eyeing us, he doesn’t make a move, letting Donovan approach me.
“Hey, I’m looking for Sabrina. Do you…?” Donovan trails off, and I can see that I misjudged the situation, because it’s just now that his expression becomes suspicious. “What are you doing here? Did you use my ticket?”
“No!” The denial was too obvious, but I’ve chosen my path. Now I have to walk it. “No. Of course I didn’t do that. I just. I’m, um, here—”
Suddenly, an arm slips around my waist. “She’s here with me. It’s okay, Simone. We don’t have to keep it a secret.”
I look up to see it’s none-other-than the antagonizing prick from the ballroom, and I’m both shocked and…aroused?
I mean, I’m not into being rescued. By anyone. Ever.
