Author Guest Post from Valentina Giambanco, author of Blood and Bone

Synopsis:

After two years in the Seattle Police Department, homicide detective Alice Madison has finally found a measure of peace she has never known before–a sense of belonging.

When a local burglary escalates into a gruesome murder, Madison takes charge of the investigation, only to discover that this is no ordinary killing. She finds herself tracking a serial assassin who has haunted the city for years–and whose brutality is the stuff of legend among the super-max prisons of the Pacific Northwest.

As she delves deeper into the case, Madison learns that the widow of one of the victims is being stalked–is the killer poised to strike again? As pressures mount, Madison will stop at nothing to save the next innocent victim . . . even if it means playing a killer’s endgame by presenting herself as the bait.

THREE BOOKS THAT INSPIRED ME WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND INSPIRED ME TO WRITE

I have always loved stories. One of my earliest memories is making up adventures for my stuffed toys. And I’ve never really played with dolls; I remember owning a doll as a sort of experiment for a few weeks but it could not keep up with the rest of the crew and was quickly sent back to where it came from. I loved stories and adventures and – since I started reading and before I could do joined up writing – the books I read reflected the need to find new worlds and push my boundaries.

WHITE FANG by Jack London, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS by Thomas Harris, and A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT a novella by Norman Maclean are very different works but somehow all have shaped how I write, and are still a source of inspiration. .

I grew up in various cities in Mediterranean Italy so obviously I found my joy reading about frozen Alaska, dog sleds and snow so deep it makes trees disappear. It was a world so exotic to me that it could have been another planet. WHITE FANG – with its wolfdog protagonist – was perhaps the first introduction to a world beyond jolly fairy tales and happy endings. It was an occasionally brutal portrait of the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s and it was quite relentless in its perspective of wilderness vs humans vs animals. Ultimately there is happiness and redemption but in order to get there the wolfdog has to experience all kinds of dangers and injustice. I fell in love with that wilderness and it was probably the first book about a serial killer I ever read – nothing is as beautiful, intriguing and ultimately lethal as an Alaskan winter.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS knocked me for six. Here was a bad guy – one of the most iconic villains of all time – and in a baffling way I was not altogether sorry he found freedom by the end of the story. The rookie agent sent to his web of deception is as beautifully written a young woman in a men’s world as she could be. Thomas Harris was a crime reporter before he started writing fiction and his style was then sparse and economic (that goes for the first two novels he wrote; by the time HANNIBAL comes along his style is grand guignol meets crime fiction with a dash of sheer unbridled nuttiness).

The notion that the antagonist was possibly the most important factor in the book was a revelation. The small touches that make Clarice Starling leap off the page were like a writing masterclass – I reread the book each time I start a novel of my own; the bar is set impossibly high but it gives me something to aim for. When I started writing my first novel – THE GIFT OF DARKNESS – and was creating the character of Alice Madison, Clarice Starling was the inspiration; the young woman who hunts down monsters to protect the innocent.

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT by Norman Maclean is a complete change of pace. This gentle story about two fly-fishing brothers and their reverend father has stayed with me since I first read it (yes, the Robert Redford film is excellent but its brilliance lies in the fact that they kept much of the first person narrative from the book).

The first line of the novella says so much: ‘In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly-fishing.’ The story is set in an early 20th-century Montana family and the relationship between the brothers lies at the heart of the tale. One of them – a fly-fishing artist – is ultimately beaten to death by criminals and his grieving brother must somehow find the answers he seeks in nature. He loved his brother but didn’t understand him; he badly wanted to help him and yet his brother wouldn’t let him. The story manages to deal with the deeper questions of life, love and family relationships with a light touch; they are explored in the description of the wild Montana rivers which seem to remind the readers and the characters that there are always more powerful forces at work. The last words of the novella are I’m haunted by waters and could not be more fitting; this story still haunts me and the odd sentence or turn of phrase will pop up unbidden when I least expect it.

The influence of these books has shifted and changed as the years have passed but they are still there, still present like specks of gold in rocks. Now I write about a homicide detective in Seattle – a young woman who could be a distant relative of Clarice Starling – and nature and wilderness have been present and essential in each of the books in the Madison series.

And, finally, many years after reading WHITE FANG, last summer I met not one but two wolfdogs – and yes, it was just as amazing as I had hoped.

 Excerpt

Mia was good in hand-to-hand combat against one. Against two, she could hold her own. Against three? Well, she wasn’t going down without doing some damage of her own.
Right before one of the men reached her, a knife embedded in the back of his throat. He fell at her feet, gurgling blood. She looked around, trying to figure out where the blade had been thrown from, but she couldn’t see anyone.
Then she didn’t have time to keep looking as she was fighting Camilo and his last man. She gritted her teeth as her upper right arm was sliced.
She took a step back and eyed Camilo and his man, each holding a long blade. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw movement. She caught a glimpse of a man in all black right before Camilo raised his weapon and came at her.
Mia held her stance as he charged. She saw her advantage and took it. Using the big guy’s dead body as a vault, she launched herself, feet first, at Camilo in a double leg grapple.
Wrapping her legs around his neck, she used her momentum and swung to the side, bringing him to the ground. She felt his neck break as she twisted.
Rotating midair, she landed on one knee with her left hand on the ground. With her combat knife still in hand, she turned her to the last of Camilo’s men – only to find him lying on the ground with a knife in his chest.
A man in all black walked from the trees and retrieved his blades. Without a word, he made his way to her. As he closed the distance between them, she let her eyes run over this unknown man.
Tall, muscular, and . . . hard. He walked with purpose, as if assured that he would get whatever he was after. He had the appearance of a military man with his dark hair cropped close on the sides and short on top.
The hint of whiskers graced a strong jaw and chin. His wide, thin lips tilted in a half-smile that made her stomach feel as if she’d just been on a roller coaster—and wished for another ride.
Thick brows slashed over hazel eyes that watched her with interest. He stopped a few feet from her and let her look over him. She slowly stood, taking in the black fatigues and black tee shirt.
“We’ve got company,” he said and jerked his chin as he looked over her shoulder.
She turned her head and saw the six men rushing toward them. A second later, bullets began flying around them.

“Go!” the man said as he grabbed her arm and tugged her toward the plane.
She didn’t need to be told twice. In moments, she was inside the plane and starting the engines. With every bullet that pierced the Valkyrie, she winced.
The sound of the engines roaring to life made her smile. She started forward, glancing back at the open door. Whoever the stranger was who’d helped her had little time to reach her before she left.
She closed her eyes briefly, because she knew she wouldn’t leave him. It wasn’t in her nature. Impatience filled her as the plane began to roll forward away from the gunfire.
There was a grunt. When she looked back, the stranger was in her plane, pulling the door closed. Without a word, she throttled the aircraft, speeding down the runway.
The flashing lights of police cars halted the chase of Camilo’s men, but for how long? They didn’t know where she lived. With Camilo dead, they might leave her alone. But it was a big “might.”
When the stranger came to sit in the seat next to her, she glanced his way. He buck led the seat belt and leaned his head back, closing his eyes.
“Who are you?” she demanded.
“Not even a thank you?” he asked with a grin, his eyes still shut.
She held back a sigh. “Thank you. Now. Who are you?”
“I thought you’d know.” His head turned, and his eyes opened to stare at her again.
There was something about him that looked familiar. It took her a moment, but she pieced it together. “Which Loughman brother are you?”
“Cullen,” he said with a smile.
Cullen. She stared at him with a bit of surprise. She knew from talks with Orrin, as well as from reports she’d read, that the Loughman boys were some of the best around – military or private sector.
She also knew the middle brother, Owen, was the peacekeeper, who was quiet as he listened to everyone and everything before reacting. The eldest, Wyatt, was the intense one with barely leashed violence beneath the surface.
But it was the youngest, Cullen, who set her back on her heels. Each time she thought of him, chills raced over her skin—and that was before she knew he was heart-stoppingly good-looking.
He made her . . . ache . . . in a way she hadn’t experienced in a very long time.
Why did it have to be him that came to her? Why couldn’t it have been Wyatt? She could’ve handled the eldest Loughman with ease.
Cullen held a combination of both his brothers. There was a heavy dose of lethal brutality just waiting to be released on those who stood against his country—or his family.
But he was also patient. To some, he might seem indifferent, but she’d seen the look he currently wore on Orrin’s face before. There was no indifference. Only planning and preparation down to the very last detail.
She briefly closed her eyes. The attraction couldn’t be denied. But it wasn’t just that. She’d felt desire before. This was something . . . more. It was deeper, fuller.
More acute.
It left her with a yearning that rocked her, a hunger that consumed her. She might’ve heard stories about Cullen, but she didn’t know him.
Her gaze locked on him as if magnetized. His hazel eyes watched her like a predator, but she wasn’t afraid. No, it was more exhilarating than anything.
Forcing her attention back to flying, she set a course for Dover. Back to the place that hadn’t just altered her life, but the Loughman boys’, as well.
“I’ve been expecting one of you,” she finally said.
He looked out the windshield. “There are answers to questions about my father’s kidnapping at Dover. And with you.”
“Nothing is going to stop me from finding him. Orrin is one of the best men I know.”
“Then start at the beginning. We’ve got a little time before we reach the base.”
The beginning. No. Not so far back as that. There were things Cullen didn’t need to know, things that were better left in the past.
She may be in an unsavory situation, and he might have just saved her, but that didn’t give him the right to her secrets.

EXCERPT:

Her face was stunning. Wide smile. White teeth and a good deal of them. Big eyes. Elegant nose. Soft cheekbones. All of this she highlighted with the expert use of makeup from what was clearly a gift of superior genes into something that shone like a Hollywood starlet.

A starlet of a stripper who looked a good deal like Dolly Parton, who also likely got home the night before, earliest, three in the morning, and was right then, only hours later, back on the stage helping another girl by teaching her some moves.

“Marcus, brother,” Smithie’s voice came at him. “You got a problem with the way I do business, and I give you reason to have that problem, then we have a talk. I don’t give you that reason, we don’t have conversations like this one. That’s our deal.”

Marcus listened to him while he watched Daisy talking to the other girl and then she ran across the stage, doing it gracefully in platform sandals, her stone-washed jeans tight on her ass and hips and all the way down her legs. Still, after she ran the four steps, she launched herself high, grabbing on to the pole at least three feet higher than she was, her body swinging around by just her hands.

When the swing ended, she climbed up the pole, hand over hand. Doing this quickly, taking herself up another four feet, she flipped her bottom half over, wrapping her skinny legs around the pole. She dropped back, her hair flowing down, and with her only hold on the pole being her legs, she arched her back and slid down slowly, somehow circling the pole as she did it.

She ended this doing a layout with her hands on the floor, her legs in slow and controlled movements coming over her head one after the other. Her hands pushing off, she was up.

Standing straight with perfect posture.

kristen-ashley-headshotAbout Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Rock Chick Reawakening by Kristen Ashley….ARC Review

Rock Chick Reawakening release tomorrow, 1/3/2017

Synopsis:

From New York Times bestselling author, Kristen Ashley, comes the long-awaited story of Daisy and Marcus, Rock Chick Reawakening. A prequel to Kristen’s Rock Chick series, Rock Chick Reawakening shares the tale of the devastating event that nearly broke Daisy, an event that set Marcus Sloan—one of Denver’s most respected businessmen and one of the Denver underground’s most feared crime bosses—into finally making his move to win the heart of the woman who stole his.

My Review:

Rock Chick Reawakening by Kristen Ashley is part of her fantabulous Rock Chick series as well as the first novella in the 1,001 Dark Nights 2017 lineup…and what an amazing kick of to the year this was!

Psst…Do you think it’s ok to write a review that just says “buy this book! You will LOVE IT!” repeated a hundred times?  Probably not, right? (but just so you know, you really DO have to buy this book because you will LOVE IT!) Ok, real review ahead…

Here’s where I confess something big…I haven’t read a whole lot of the Rock Chick series.  I know, I know!  I really need to get cracking and read the rest of the series. Especially after DEVOURING this story.  I love all of the 1,001 Dark Nights novellas. To ask me to choose a favorite would be like asking my mom which one of her kids is her fave (even though I know it simply has to be me…) so I won’t actually say out loud that this ranks up pretty high on my list but you can probably guess what I’m hinting at.

From the very first page of this novella I was hooked. Yes, Marcus and Daisy’s beginning was beyond incredible to read.  Yes, there is so much emotion and heat and intensity sprinkled with humor and very real moments. Yes, the story itself is off the charts addictive and you won’t be able to put it down.  But it’s the WAY Kristen Ashley writes her stories that really brings the magic.  As a reader, I feel like I’m a silent part of the story, hanging out in the periphery, watching the story play out.  In my mind’s eye I can see it, and feel it, and experience it all in a way that is just so amazing and different and it’s unique to Ms. Ashley and her voice.  I’m not sure if I’m even explaining it adequately and if I’m not, you’ll just have to trust me when I say: if you haven’t yet read her, you must! (I know all you Rock Chicks out there will agree!)

Whether you’re new to Kristen Ashley or a long-time reader, I have zero doubt this story will knock your bookish socks off!  Thank you, Ms. Ashley, for Marcus and Daisy and their incredible journey.

Five Loves

Alex is lost and alone, with only his dog, Stan for company. He doesn’t expect kindness from anyone anymore, but sometimes hope can be found in the most unlikely places. He has a second chance at happiness, but there’s a dark side to Alex, and a reason that more than one person has called him crazy.
Single mother Dawn is doing just fine. Except that her ex- is a pain in the ass, her sister isn’t speaking to her, and her love life is on the endangered list.
At least her job as a veterinarian is going well. Until a crazy-looking guy arrives at her office accompanied by an aging dog with toothache. Or maybe Alex Winters isn’t so crazy after all, just … different.
Dawn realizes that she’s treated him the same way that all the gossips in town have treated her—people can be very cruel.

Contains scenes of an adult nature.

This is a standalone novel with no cliff-hanger.

My Review:

As with every one of Jane Harvey-Berrick’s books, there is a wonderful element of high emotion.  I know that with every book of hers I read, I will fall in love with a damaged hero.  Boy oh boy, this was no exception.  From the very beginning, my heart was totally broken for Alex.  He was a mysterious character with a past I knew was not only going to explain why he was the way he was today but was also going to gut me.  Indeed I was right.  Alex has been chewed up and spit out by love and loss and he’s desperately trying to put the pieces back together. That road leads him to cross paths with a local woman and her daughter in the town he is trying to rebuild his life in.  Their story holds many ups and downs that had me laughing and crying and praying for a happy ever after for them.  Now, I won’t spoil anything but I will say that it ended simply perfectly.

Beyond Alex and his relationships with the people in this book is his amazing and special relationship with his dog, Stan.  Wow.  Just wow.  Their relationship was written with such a touching amount of pure love and devotion that comes in that special bond between a guy and his furry best friend.  From how Stan came into Alex’s life to how we get to read what Stan is thinking at times, Ms. Harvey-Berrick gave this book that extra special layer that only she can.  It was incredible and I loved it so damn much.

I will warn you, have some tissues handy for this read, but I know you’ll love it as much as I did.  Thank you, Ms. Harvey-Berrick for yet another fantastic read.

Four Loves

He still reminded me of a Mountain Man, and he appeared to be wearing the clothes that I’d thought were rags. His long, shaggy brown hair and thick beard hid most of his face. A shudder of apprehension ran through me.
He seemed just as ill at ease as he had been by the lake, his eyes darting around restlessly, but then he walked around to the passenger door and I lost sight of him.
When he reappeared, he was carrying a large dog, one that easily weighed 80 or 90 pounds. He must have been strong because he carried the weight easily. I recalled the thick slabs of muscle that sculpted his chest and arms when I’d seen him earlier. Yes, there was no doubt that he was strong, but as he held his pet, his hands were gentle.
I watched his chin bob, and I realized that he was talking to his dog.
Carefully, he set the animal on the ground and fixed a leash around its neck.
The dog immediately sat down and refused to budge. His coat was thick and looked glossy and healthy, his muzzle starting to gray. I guessed he was part retriever, part mastiff—large and solid. And heavy.
Ashley giggled as the man tugged on the leash, but the dog still wouldn’t move. The man stood still, looking at his pet, his hands on his hips, then he shook his head in defeat. Bending down, he scooped up the dog again and shouldered his way through the door into the office.
Now he was closer, I could study him in more detail.
His hair was a tangle of light brown with sun-blond lights, still uncombed, an off-putting mess of wild, crazy curls. His clothes were even worse now I could see him wearing them, unkempt and torn as if he’d given up, but they were clean. And when he stopped in front of Ashley, I caught the faint scent of soap and laundry detergent—no cologne. This man was a paradox.
Ashley smiled tightly from her position behind the reception desk.
“Mr. Winters and Stan, is that right?”
He nodded but didn’t speak, still holding his dog in his arms. His face was grim, as if he’d never smiled, never thought of smiling.
So this was the man who’d bought Old Joe’s place? I immediately felt guilty that I’d assumed he was trespassing and camping illegally. I didn’t know that somebody had already moved into the property. Technically, I’d been the interloper this morning. I felt like such a judgmental bitch. But he’d really scared me, and I hadn’t been thinking clearly.
“I’m so sorry,” Ashley said with fake sweetness, “but Dr. Petz, our male veterinarian, had to go out on an emergency visit. Dr. Andrews over there is available.”
He turned to stare at me and his body stiffened. I saw a flicker of recognition in his eyes before he dropped his gaze to the floor again. I thought for sure that he’d turn and walk out, but then he glanced at his dog and I saw the expression soften in his curious golden-brown eyes as he peered up at me and nodded slowly.
“Great!” said Ashley, her gaze glancing across to me. “I’ve got basic information from your email, but if you could just fill out this form and…”
“Maybe you’d like to bring Stan into the examination room, Mr. Winters,” I interrupted quickly. “He looks rather heavy.”
The man blinked twice, but carried the dog inside without commenting or even looking at Ashley.
“Rude!” Ashley said, not quietly enough, and although I agreed, I shot her a look and took the form from her.
She leaned toward me, her eyes wide as her voice dropped to an urgent whisper.
“I’ll keep my ears open, Dawn. He looks kind of weird. You know, serial killer weird.”
I pressed my lips together and followed my new client.

The Rule Maker by Jennifer Blackwood….Excerpt Reveal

All her rules are about to change…

THE RULE MAKER
The Rule Breakers #2
Jennifer Blackwood
Releasing January 16th, 2017
Entangled Embrace

Ten
Steps to Surviving a New Job:

1. Don’t sleep with the client. It’ll get you fired. (Sounds easy enough.)
2. Don’t blink when new client turns out to be former one-night stand.

3. Don’t call same client a jerk for never texting you back.

4. Don’t believe client when he says he really, really wanted to call.

5. Remember, the client is always right—so you can’t junk punch him when he
demands new design after new design.

6. Ignore accelerated heartbeat every time sexy client walks into room.

7. Definitely ignore client’s large hands. They just mean he wears big gloves.

8. Don’t let client’s charm wear you down. Be strong.

9. Whatever you do, don’t fall for the client. You’ll lose more than your
job—maybe even your heart.

10. If all else fails, see rule number one again.

He scrubbed
his palms over his face and rested his elbows on his knees. “This was not how I
saw this night going.”
“Big
Valentine’s Day plans?”
He lowered his
hands and looked at me like I’d just claimed I single-handedly caused the storm
raging outside. “I didn’t even know that was today. Does this mean we’re each
other’s valentines by default?”
I scoffed.
“Not a chance.”
He chuckled.
“Always so blunt. I like that about you.” He quickly cleared his throat as if
he hadn’t meant to say that. “Well, non-valentine, looks like we’re going to be
stuck here a while. Have anything in mind?” he said.
I decided
against packing on another insult. He was being nice, and this sure as heck
beat staring at the wall the rest of the night. “My form of entertainment is at
6 percent battery, so I’m open to suggestions.”
“Mine is fully
charged. Want to watch something?”
“Sure.” What
else did I have to do? Before I knew it, I was sitting on the bed next to him, leaning
against the ornately carved headboard. Snow gusting against the window was the
only sound in the room as he searched for a show for us to watch.
So quiet.
Way too quiet.
I fidgeted
with my necklace, moving the small diamond back and forth on the chain. The
last time I was in bed with Ryder… I didn’t even want to finish that thought,
because it’d do nothing but make this situation worse. I chanced a peek in his
direction.

He chewed the
inside of his cheek, swiping through our options. “This is awkward, huh?” he
said.
“We’ve
achieved Urkel status.”
He chuckled
and scrolled through the show queue. “Would you rather watch Law
and Order: SVU
or Criminal
Minds?”
“That is quite
possibly the worst Would You Rather question ever asked.”
His eyes cut
to mine. “I didn’t know I was playing a game.”
“You’ve never
played it?”
He shook his
head.
Lainey and I
played this game all the time in college, and when we’d take road trips
together. She always came up with the grossest ones. “It’s simple. All you have
to do is ask the person which horrible thing they’d rather do. The harder the
question, the better. Like would you rather lay in a pit of snakes, or eat
questionably dead roadkill?” I pointed to his phone. “Oh, John
Tucker Must Die.
I like that one.
“Negative,
ghost rider.” He scrolled past my suggestion. “And what the hell does questionably
dead mean? Is it still twitching, or are we talking
suspicious cause of death?”
I shrugged.
“The interpretation’s up to you.”
“You’re
absolutely no help.” He swiped his thumb across his beard and contemplated. “I
guess I’d go with the snakes.”
“Okay, now
it’s your turn,” I said.
“Do I really
have to play? I thought we were picking a show.”
I shot him a
look.
“Fine. Would
you rather have me or Chewbacca as your valentine?”
“Too easy. The
spider.”
He put his
hand to his heart. “You wound me.”
“Stop being
such a baby.” I swatted at his chest and immediately pulled my hand back. Nope.
Would not go there. “Okay, would you rather not be able to see or talk for a
month?”
He answered
instantly. “See.”
“Right. You’d
probably go nuts if you couldn’t open that big mouth of yours.”
His lips
twitched. “You’re one to talk.”
“Excuse me?”
Okay, I did have a tough time keeping my thoughts on lockdown outside the
office, but that was my own cross to bear.
“Don’t even
try to play it off like you’re innocent.”
I’d dated a
lot of losers in the past, most who hadn’t even bothered to get to know me, but
even after only hanging out a few times, Ryder had me pegged. He was
perceptive. I saw the look in his eyes whenever I dealt with Jason. His attention
focused solely on me was unnerving. “Jerk,” I sputtered.
“Now I know
you’re holding back. You can do way better than that.” He scrolled through his
phone again. “How about Die Hard?”
“Are all your
show selections about death? I’m starting to worry I made a mistake coming over
here.” My lips pulled into a smile and I quickly extinguished it. God, I wanted
to hate him.
“Fine.” He
continued looking at the Netflix queue. “Would you rather eat sushi from a taco
stand, or lick an airplane armrest?”
“Good one.
Sushi.” I pointed to his screen. “How about 10 Things I
Hate About You?”
He shook his
head and chuckled. “Are all of your suggestions
going to not-so-subtly tell me you hate me?”
I smiled
sweetly. “Maybe.”
“Just think,
most people would find this to be a romantic escape. Two people, stuck in the
mountains on Valentine’s Day,” he said.
“We’re
Hallmark movie material, all right,” I deadpanned.
“Okay, fine.
How about The Walking Dead?”
“Your show
picking powers have been officially revoked.” I grabbed the phone from his
hand.
“Hey!” He
grabbed for the phone, and I held it out of reach. “You’re going to regret
that.” Within seconds he was on top of me, playfully pinning me to the bed, his
strong hands circling my wrists. Air evaporated from my lungs as our gazes
connected.
I was
immediately transported back to that night.
Tell
me what you want, Zoey. Tell me what you need from me.
I swallowed
hard. That was months ago, and those words still haunted me from time to time.
Because he did exactly that, gave me what I wanted and needed. Repeatedly.

“C’mon GC!  Let’s go dance.”  I shake my head no.

As she begins to pout, I pull her into my lap as I take a seat on the bench.  “I think I’d rather just sit here with you.”  I place a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear causing her eyes to lock on mine.

“And what are we gonna do beside sit?” she says with a raised eyebrow.

“Talk.  Mar, I want to learn everything I can about you.”

Placing her arms around my neck, “Ask away,” she says.

“Favorite color?”

“Carolina Blue.  Yours?”

“Yellow.   Favorite movie?”

“The Notebook.  What’s you’re favorite type of music?” she asks.

“Country.”  Then she begins to giggle.  “What’s so funny?”

“You’re like a Yankee Cowboy aren’t ya?”  Stunned.  Never in my life has a girl called it like she sees it, and I love it.

“Yankee Cowboy, huh?”

“Yeah, I mean look at your country boy hat,” she says with a wink.  “I mean now all you need is a horse or two and you’re good.”  I can’t help but laugh.  She obviously doesn’t know what’s funny.  “Why you laughin’?”
