My Review:

Finding Our Forever is the newest work from author Brenda Novak, and admittedly the first of her works that I have read. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be adding more of her books to my to-read list, especially the future books in this series.

This series starter lays the groundwork for what I have a feeling is going to be an amazing series. This story kicks things off with two people affected by adoptions, but in two different ways. One is searching for the adoptive mother who gave her away at birth, the other is enjoying the family he was adopted into as a young boy. The woman’s search leads her to both the truth of her past as well as to a love she never expected. I loved all the aspects of this story. From the setting to the characters, it was all done beautifully. As the story progressed, I experienced so many emotions and it was fantastic. I will say there was quite a big secret the heroine was keeping from her love interest and I was a nervous wreck that the truth would tear them apart. Luckily, all ended just as I had hoped it would.

If you’re looking for a well written, well-rounded story with fabulous characters and a wonderful story line, this is a book for you! Thank you, Ms. Novak, for a great read and a series I look forward to following in the future!

Candace’s eyes flew open in the darkness when the mattress shifted and a warm, naked body pressed to hers. Her heart rate shot up as she rolled away, then a low, masculine chuckle penetrated the roaring of blood in her ears, an instant before that distinctive, spicy scent registered.

Ryan. As the wave of alarm receded, relief and joy took its place.

“Hi,” he whispered, sliding one arm around her to draw her close.

Excitement punched through her. She rolled into him, wrapping her arms around his neck and smiling against his mouth as he kissed her. “Hi. Am I dreaming?” She cuddled in closer and held on tight, squeezing her eyes shut. He was here, safe and sound, and this one embrace soothed all the emotional bruises she’d been feeling.

“Nope. Want me to prove it?”

“Mm-hmm.” God, he felt good. No surprise, he was already fully erect and hot against her abdomen. Arousal stirred, warming her from the inside out.

He brought his mouth down on hers and the kiss changed from slow and lazy to hungry in a single heartbeat. It felt like a year since she’d last held him this way, rather than months. He tasted like toothpaste and felt like heaven.

When he raised his head a minute later, she was breathing faster and her entire body tingled, crying out for more. “I can’t believe you’re really here,” she whispered, running a finger down the side of his cheek, over the short, neatly-trimmed beard.

Her handsome, proud warrior. In the last picture she’d seen of him a few days ago, the beard had been wild and bushy after spending almost two weeks out in the mountains.

“Things settled down a lot so I managed to get leave a few days early. Found a flight that got me in an hour ago and drove straight here to surprise you.” He leaned back slightly, his grin flashing white in the soft moonlight coming through the blinds that covered the window above the headboard. “So are you surprised?”

Her heart squeezed. “Yes, I’m so glad you’re here.” She had been tired when she’d gone to bed, but not so tired she should have missed the sound of the door opening or him coming into the room. He did have crazy stealth powers, however.

He huffed out a laugh and bent to find her mouth with his once more. “Missed you, Ace.”

Old Maids at Versailles – Guest Blog Post by Sally Christie

Louis XV, who ruled France for a good part of the 18^th century, fathered 10 children with his long suffering Polish wife: Eight daughters and two sons. Six daughters and one son (the father of the ill-fated Louis XVI) survived to their teenage years.

His two eldest daughters were twins and were known as Madame Elisabeth and Madame Henriette (daughters of the king were always known as Madame, even if they weren’t married). True to royal form, Madame Elisabeth was married off to Spain just two weeks after her 12^th birthday. It wasn’t the most prestigious match – she was only marrying a younger son, not the heir to the Spanish throne – but it helped solidify the France /Spain alliance.

Then, the marrying stopped. Louis XV’s five other daughters – Henriette, Adelaide, Victoire, Sophie and Louise – never married, an almost unheard of situation in the history of royalty. Traditionally, princesses were valuable as pawns for securing alliances between countries and building new ones. So what happened? Why did the five of them never marry?

It was a combination of factors. For starters, there were not as many potential Catholic bridegrooms in a Europe that was half Protestant. Had Charles Stuart, the Young Pretender, succeeded in regaining the British throne, he would have been a good candidate, but his attempt failed and the French king was not eager to ally himself with a stateless pretender.

Louis was also very fond of his daughters, at least when they were younger, and was reluctant to send them away. He was also a wee bit lazy, and never made their marriages a priority. The princesses themselves, of course, loved their father and their life at Versailles, and would not have wanted to leave the comfort and luxuries of (arguably) the most magnificent palace in the world for some inferior court in a foreign country.

The third book in my trilogy about the many mistresses of Louis XV, The Enemies of Versailles, opens in 1750 when the five sisters were between 13 and 22 years old. One of the running themes in the book is their fear of getting married and what they would do to avoid it: the youngest, Louise, was even rumored to stuff one shoulder of her gown to make herself look misshapen and crippled, and therefore unmarriageable! Only Madame Henriette had any semblance of a love affair. She and the handsome young Duc de Chartres, a cousin of the king, fell in love and wanted to wed. The King couldn’t agree, for it would mean the Orleans family would become too powerful and upset the balance of power amongst his nobility.

As they got older and lost some of their youthful charm, the unmarried spinsters became objects of ridicule and figures of fun. As shown in both The Rivals of Versailles and The Enemies of Versailles (half of which is told by Madame Adelaide), the king’s daughters pitted themselves against their father’s mistresses and gradually became more and more estranged from the king and from any sort of influence at court.

The decision to never marry the princesses had serious consequences. Each princess, as a “Daughter of France” had the right to an enormous household, each containing hundreds of officers and servants. This, of course, cost the government a great deal of money. By the time their three nephews (including the future Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette) married and had children, there were more royal households at Versailles than ever before, all of them draining the coffers of the country and increasing its debt, no small factor in the coming Revolution.

“If anything happens to her, we will hold you and the agency personally responsible.”

“Nothing will.”

Her father scowled. “Ms. Silver swears you’re capable.”

“That I am.” Though Justice spoke to her father, he didn’t look away from Fallon, and she shivered at the deepness of the voice that stroked over her skin like a warm caress.

“She also said you were a professional fighter,” her father continued.

“Was once,” Justice agreed. “I fought with the SBC, but I don’t compete anymore.”

“SBC?” her father asked.

“Supreme Battle Challenge. Best known fight organization there is.”

Ah, a fighter. Fallon gave him another quick glance. She supposed that explained the damaged ear, crook in his nose and the outrageous hairstyle. “Not a boxer,” she guessed.

“Mixed martial arts, so kicking, grappling, submissions, but yeah, I’m a pretty good boxer, too.” He jokingly threw a few shadow punches, then, with a glance at her dad, quickly sobered. “Not to brag or anything.”

With a critical eye, her father said, “Admittedly, you’re not what I expected.”

“You were looking for Rocky Balboa? The one in the later movies, not the first? He did get slick in the last few, huh? That’s not me, though. Never will be.”

Such an outpouring left her father stymied for a moment. “Well, my wife and Ms. Silver did suggest that you’d be able to blend in.”

Fallon remained on the last step—and still Justice towered over her. She smiled up at him. “That was my stipulation. That you be able to blend, I mean. I didn’t want a bodyguard to be super conspicuous. But seeing you now, I can’t imagine you blending in too easily.”

He crooked a brow. “Why not?”

“You’re rather large to blend.”

“Depends on where we go, right?” He took her elbow and very unnecessarily helped her down the last step. “Bar, club, steakhouse—no one will pay much attention to me. In this house?” He looked around as if a little put off by the grandeur. “Or a fancy party?” He rasped a big hand over his beard stubble. “I can shave, spiff up a little and force myself into a suit, but that still might not do the trick.”

Today the Liberty States Create Something Magical Conference Speaker Interview Series continues with author Virginia Kantra:

What made you want to become a writer? How early in life did you start writing?

I’ve been making up stories all my life. I wrote fairytales for my younger cousins to bribe them to go to bed and plays that I performed with my sister on our neighbors’ porch. The idea that I could get paid to write always thrilled me. But it wasn’t until my youngest child started kindergarten that I began to write seriously for a particular market.

Is there one piece of advice you would give an aspiring writer?

Not to accept too much advice. There’s no “right” and “wrong” in writing fiction; there’s only “works” and “does not work,” and each writer has to discover what works for her.

Who is on your bookshelf?

Oh, wow. So many books. My reading – and my writing – has spanned a lot of genres. Right now, in contemporary romance and women’s fiction, my go-to authors are Robyn Carr, Jennifer Crusie, Kristan Higgins, JoAnn Ross. I started reading Jojo Moyes last year. Love her. And Laura Florand’s really good.

Can you tell us about one of the most memorable moments in your writing career thus far?

Well, the RITA Awards stick out. Bounding onstage to wrest my gold statuette from Toni Blake was a big moment.

But I think over the course of a career you recognize it’s the little moments that matter most. When a writer you’ve idolized forever says something that makes you realize she’s actually read your work. When a reader tells you that your story helped her get through her kid being bullied in school or her mother’s illness. There’s no substitute for that.

Tell us about your newest release/current work in progress.

I’m delighted that Bookpage recently named Carolina Dreaming as one of their Top Ten Romances of 2016, and I do plan at least one more book in the Dare Island series. But I’m taking some time now to write a new project—my “sisters” books. They have a lot of the same elements I love: strong family ties, small North Carolina community, romance. But the focus is more mother/daughter, sister/sister, women’s journey stuff. I’m very excited.

Tell us a little about your workshop at the Create Something Magical Conference.

I’m doing a master class on emotion. Because it’s our emotional identification with a story that hooks us. The heart of emotional writing isn’t about adjectives and introspection. It’s the author’s ability to make us care about her characters and what happens to them that keeps us reading. So I’m talking about creating compelling characters through the use of deep point of view, choosing scenes and situations that develop conflict and raise the emotional stakes, and evoking reactions through the use of significant, specific detail.

As writers, we need to make ourselves vulnerable. We need to be emotionally honest.

A flicker of jealousy flashed when Rena thought about some other woman tending to Zander’s comfort. She ran her fingers over the smooth paper and, for a split second, thought about using her gift to take a look at this Lana chick. But when the front door clicked open, she immediately thought better of it and quickly slapped the note onto the counter.

She spun around and clasped her hands behind her back awkwardly just as Zander stepped inside. She was going to make a smart-ass remark but the sight of him momentarily made her lose the ability to speak. Or at the very least, her mind went totally blank because all she was capable of for that minute was soaking in the sight of him.

He was dripping wet. Water sluiced from his leather jacket, which he promptly hung up before kicking off his boots. His jeans were wet too and clung to his long, strong-looking legs.

Were the pants coming off next?

Rena swallowed hard when she let her gaze skim over his ass as he leaned over and peeled off his socks. Jeez. Even his bare feet were sexy. The dark T-shirt he wore was damp and clung to every dip and curve of muscle in his back. His ropy, well-defined arms flexed as Zander turned to face her and pushed his shaggy, wet hair off his face with both hands. His damp skin glistened in the soft, yellow light of the cabin. Zander’s chiseled features seemed even more defined than before. His jaw was covered in the dark shadow of scruff, and those haunted eyes of his peered at her intently beneath dark eyebrows.

The two of them stood there for at least ten beats of her heart. Neither one said a word. Only the sound of rain pelting the roof and their breathing filled the cabin. The space that only moments ago felt open and spacious had shrunk in size the instant Zander stepped into it.

The man was like a walking flame, and it was as if all of the oxygen had been sucked from the air the instant he slipped inside. Suddenly, each breath was more labored than the last. The plan, the one she was so proud of, now seemed like a stupid idea. This man wasn’t one to be toyed with.

A flicker of self-doubt niggled in the back of her mind.

What if he really didn’t want her?

Maybe he really had only kissed her because she reminded him of Arianna?

Rena sucked in a shuddering breath as he returned her bold stare. The simmering heat in his unwavering gaze seared into hers. Warmth seeped into her chest and her entire body shimmered beneath his inspection.

It was now or never.

Her heart raced and her tongue flicked over her lips before she finally worked up the courage to say something.

“Your Lana,” she sputtered and jutted her thumb over shoulder toward the counter. “I—I mean someone named Lana left you a note.”

Rena’s cheeks flamed. The hint of a smile played at Zander’s lips and he moved slowly toward her. Her befuddlement amused him? She tucked her hair behind her ears as he sidled closer and picked up the paper. Even with the barstool separating them, his towering form was close enough that his body heat, even more intense than it had been earlier, wafted over her, reminding her of the flickering flames of a fire.

She half expected steam to rise off his damp skin.

Rena leaned one elbow on the island and studied him while he read the note.

“Who’s Lana?” she asked with as much nonchalant innocence as she could. “She sure is thoughtful to come over and set the place up for you.”

“She’s a friend.”

Zander crumpled the paper and tossed it over Rena’s head into the tall, white garbage can in the corner. The movement brought him even closer, and his musky, leather scent filled her head. She breathed deeply and fought the sudden lust-ridden urge for her eyes to shift.

His arm dropped to his side and that piercing gaze flicked to hers, melting her insides bit by bit. Rena’s steely resolve to seduce the big, bad dragon wavered as she gazed into the limitless depths of his haunted eyes. Swimming behind the cool facade were the lingering effects from centuries of pain and loneliness.

Shade’s Lady by Joanna Wylde…ARC Review

My Review:

Shade’s Lady is the newest from author Joanna Wylde and is part of her Reapers MC series as well as novella number four of the 2017 1,001 Dark Nights lineup. Now, I’m going to admit that while Ms. Wylde has been on my TBR list for ages, I’ve never read any of her work until now. Man, have I been missing out! This story had so many of my favorite things from a fun and witty heroine to a total alpha male hero to plenty of drama and action. I loved it!

The thing with some MC books that I don’t like is the hero crossing the line from being alpha and taking care of what’s his (whether it be their girlfriend, property, or friends) and being protective, crossing the line and just plain being a jerk. I’m here to tell you that this was no the case with swoon-worthy Shade. Shade is the national president of the Reaper MC crew so you may think he’d be over the top with his ego. No way, Jose. This man is everything I love from a rough and tumble alpha male. He looks after everyone he holds close. He’s got a hard exterior with a soft heart I loved seeing. He isn’t much for words, but the words he does say mean so much. Truly, a gem in the MC world! Now, when it comes to Mandy, I’ve gotta say I loved her just as much. She has every reaction to every situation that we all would have. You know how sometimes you’re reading a book and when a crazy moment happens, the heroine reacts anything but normal and you want to reach through the pages and shake her? Yeah, you won’t have any of that with Mandy. I loved her very real outlook at all she’s going through and I loved her personality. She had me laughing and saying “yeah, girl!” so many times while reading. I just adored her! Together these two are a couple I won’t soon forget and I hope to see more of in the future…because I am now HOOKED on Joanna Wylde!

I also have to give a shout out to her sister and the officer helping them all out in the craziness their lives turn into. I loved those two and hope we get to see more of them.

Whether you’re already a fan of Ms. Wylde’s or a new fan, like myself, I have no doubt you will love this story as much as I did!

What made you want to become a writer? How early in life did you start writing?

I’m an avid reader. Love to get lost in a book. In fact, it’s a coping tool. Early on I found when I didn’t have a book handy I’d just go into my head and create my own story. Yeah, I was one of those kids who could hang out by themselves for long periods of time.

I help myself fall asleep by playing a story in my head. Sometimes it is a replay of something that has happened but more often it’s a dream that I wish would happen, or a sparkle that’s caught my attention that I want to play with like a cat with a ball of string pushing it here and there to see what patterns emerge.

Is there one piece of advice you would give an aspiring writer?

Write.

Sit down and start writing.

I will play out a story in my head for a time before I begin writing which is not the best way to work. Things take shape much quicker when I start typing, plotting or writing things down. One thing I’ve learned since I began writing is that I need to plot. It’s tedious but effective.

Who is on your bookshelf?

I like dark, clever soulful stories with depth and humor. I like characters who have lived, who are scarred and who find their one true love. To that end I love Kresley Cole, Kristen Ashley, Lisa Kleypas, Cat Porter and Kim Jones to name a few.

Can you tell us about one of the most memorable moments in your writing career thus far?

Being published. Seeing Deeper and Hotter on Amazon were red letter days for me. Opening my iPad and seeing my books on my shelf. Having people tell me they love my characters and asking about certain scenes are highlights of my career.

Tell us about your newest release/current work in progress.

My current work in progress is a romantic suspense series. All In is the first book in the series which revolve around former SEAls who use their money, brains, social status and experience to protect the defenseless. Each book will be a standalone, featuring a different couple.

I am also working on Rougher the next book in The Real Fling Series where my couples meet on vacation and what starts as a fling quickly becomes the real thing. Rougher is set in Greece. Each book is a standalone. Deeper and Hotter are available on Amazon.
