About BLAZE ERUPTING:

From New York Times bestselling author, Rebecca Zanetti, comes a new Scorpius Syndrome/A Brigade Novella

Hugh Johnson is nobody’s hero, and the idea of being in the limelight makes him want to growl. He takes care of his brothers, does his job, and enjoys a mellow evening hanging with his hound dog and watching the sports channel. So when sweet and sexy Ellie Smithers from his college chemistry class asks him to save millions of people from a nuclear meltdown, he doggedly steps forward while telling himself that the world hasn’t changed and he can go back to his relaxing life. One look at Ellie and excitement doesn’t seem so bad.

Eleanor Smithers knows that the Scorpius bacteria has and will change life as we know it, but that’s a concern for another day. She’s been hand-picked as the computer guru for The Brigade, which is the USA’s first line of defense against all things Scorpius, including homegrown terrorists who’ve just been waiting for a chance to strike. Their target is a nuclear power plant in the east, and the only person who can help her is Hugh, the sexy, laconic, dangerous man she had a crush on so long ago.

Excerpt:

He stood and towered over her so suddenly she stopped breathing. “Are you asking me if I’m available, Ellie Mae?”

Warmth from his body, his very close body, washed over her. She tilted her head back to meet his eyes. “Don’t call me that.” It was his little nickname for her in college, and her heart used to stutter every time he used it. Something special just between the two of them.

“Why not?” He stepped in until their feet touched.

She blinked. Sparks flew between her nerves. “Wh-what are you doing?”

“Exploring.” His gaze ran over her face, curiosity clearly gleaming in those deep eyes. “I liked you. Back then. Big eyes, sweet smile, huge brain.” He reached out and brushed a curl away from her cheek, his touch warm.

Her throat closed. Heat flashed from his touch, down her torso, to zing along her erogenous zones. “Yet the one time I made a move, you rejected me.” It still hurt. When he was down and out—injured and in pain—she’d tried to give comfort.

“I wasn’t lookin’ for forever, and you’re a forever type of gal,” he murmured, standing way too close. “That offer you made nearly killed me sayin’ no. But even though I was hurtin’ and wanted to stop the pain, I couldn’t hurt you. Ever.” As if he couldn’t help himself, he brushed his knuckles along her jawline. “But I wanted you, Ell. Just knew you’d be a mistake I’d never recover from.”

Her lungs released quickly, and she took a step sideways along the coffee table. “Agreed.”

Amusement tilted his lips. “I ain’t a college kid no more, Ellie.”

“I’m well aware of that.” She needed to go by him to get to the door, and he wasn’t moving out of the way. How in the world did he still affect her like this? It had been years, for goodness’ sake. “We’re both eons out of college.”

“I’m no longer hurtin’ or whorin’ around,” he continued, looking big and broad in the small room.

“Your point?” she snapped, trying to get her libido under some semblance of control. Why did his country-boy act turn her on? She needed a shrink. Bad.

“My point? Well now.” His smile was more wolf than sheepdog. “This time, when you make the offer? I’m gonna say yes.”

Still Me by Jojo Moyes…ARC Review

Still Me is out tomorrow, 1/30/18!

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Jojo Moyes, a new book featuring her iconic heroine of Me Before You and After You, Louisa Clark

Louisa Clark arrives in New York ready to start a new life, confident that she can embrace this new adventure and keep her relationship with Ambulance Sam alive across several thousand miles. She steps into the world of the superrich, working for Leonard Gopnik and his much younger second wife, Agnes. Lou is determined to get the most out of the experience and throws herself into her new job and New York life.

As she begins to mix in New York high society, Lou meets Joshua Ryan, a man who brings with him a whisper of her past. Before long, Lou finds herself torn between Fifth Avenue where she works and the treasure-filled vintage clothing store where she actually feels at home. And when matters come to a head, she has to ask herself: Who is Louisa Clark? And how do you reconcile a heart that lives in two places?

Funny, romantic, and poignant, Still Me follows Lou as she navigates how to stay true to herself, while pushing to live boldly in her brave new world.

My Review:

Still Me is the third book in author Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You Series and if you’ve read the series thus far, and you’ve been waiting to catch up with our gal Louisa, this is your chance.

It’s in this book that Louisa is really faced with finding out who she is…who she truly is and who she wants to be.  It’s safe to say her life’s journey hasn’t been an easy one and her new adventure in New York City will prove to have its own set of ups and downs.  But man, what a special chapter in her life this books ends up being.

When Louisa starts her job as an “assistant” of sorts to an uber wealthy, young, second wife socialite, she figured it would be a refreshing change of pace.  Reading her optimistic and awestruck view of high society was almost like watching a horror film.  You know, when the girl is going to look in the basement and you scream at the TV telling her to just run out of the house.  Yeah, that.  This family runs hot and cold, always showing a hint of dysfunction simmering beneath the surface, but Louisa always tries to look on the bright side of her situation and takes it all with a grain of salt.  Until one day she finds herself in quite a pickle.  Things come crashing down quickly, like that girl from the horror movie who ended up checking out the basement (except not life-ending or gory).  It’s then, when all the chips are down, Louisa really shines and I wanted to hoot and holler for her and the path she finally put herself on.  I do believe I actually said “atta girl!” out loud a few times!

Of course, the book doesn’t just focus on her employers.  The other characters in this book were just as fabulous.  Form the warm-hearted doorman and his wife, to the old curmudgeon and her dog named Dean Martin living down the hall who eventually becomes someone irreplaceable in Louisa’s life, I adored them all.  Well, except one.  I’ll let you figure out who that is on your own and I have a feeling you’ll feel the same way I did about him by the end of the book.

There were so many ups and downs and more than a few times I felt myself not sure of which direction I would go if I were in Louisa’s shoes.  Who could she really trust and rely on in this brand new world she was living in?  Who would appreciate her for just being her? Thankfully, after some serious soul-searching and more than a few tears (more mine than hers – because she’s a tough cookie) she gets it all squared away and I could not be happier with how it ended.  Man, that last page was everything! *dreamy sigh*

Overall I think fans of the series will love picking up with the endearing, quirky, kindhearted Louisa and will enjoy this newest tale.  I know I sure did!  (Oh, and you won’t need as many tissues as the other books but you’ll still need some!)

Thank you, Ms. Moyes, for a wonderful read.

Excerpt:

“Are we done, Julian? I would like to take my subs upstairs. It’s time I had a long talk with them.”

She held her breath as Leo stepped forward. “I’m not done.” He stood in front of Jack, going toe-to-toe with him. “I’m the Dom in residence now, Master Jack. I know that used to be your job, but you’re a guest now. Had two subs caused the trouble yours did tonight, what would you have requested then?”

Jack’s jaw tightened. “I would have immediately requested punishment. Julian would have wanted punishment for disrupting the scenes, but I would have requested punishment for the insult to me.”

Leo nodded. “They both will pay for abusing Master Julian’s trust. I want her to pay for the insult to me.”

The hand on the back of her neck tightened almost painfully, and Abby decided not to argue.

“What insult?” Jack asked.

Leo’s eyes skimmed over her. She watched from beneath her lashes. “She started everything. I was attempting to watch over Master Julian’s possession. She questioned my authority over Sally in public. She proceeded to ignore direct orders given to her for her own protection. Though the male is the one who fought, I understand and forgive his actions. He was protecting her. He’s your partner?”

There was not an ounce of condemnation in the Dom’s question. He was merely attempting to outline the relationship.

“We share our wife. But I am the head of the household.”

“Well, your wife is topping from the bottom,” Leo accused. “I can’t let the rest of the subs see her get away with it. Twenty tonight, over my knee, right now.”

The hand came off her neck and she heard a sigh. His voice was low, and she couldn’t stand the defeated sound of his reply. “We’ll be out of here in an hour. Julian, I’m sorry. Consider my membership revoked. Come along, Abigail. Sam, I expect you to pack whatever you need and meet us in the lobby.”

“No!” She reached for his hand. Jack did business with the members of this club. It meant something to him. It was the whole reason she wanted to come here. She wanted to see this side of him. It had been the first place he’d called home. Now she would be the reason he lost it. Jack growled at her. She kept her head down, but she couldn’t keep quiet. “Please, Jack. Please don’t. I couldn’t live with it. I’ll do whatever he asks. I can handle it. Please don’t let this happen.”

His hand found her chin again, and his expression was softer now. “Abigail, he could hurt you.”

“Nothing will hurt me more than knowing I did this to you.” She could feel the tears streaming down her face. “Please?”

He forced her to look him straight in the eyes, his gaze steady. “I will never allow another man to put his hands on you like that. Do you understand me? I don’t care what you’ve done or what their rules are. I only trust Sam. This relationship is between the three of us. I won’t let anyone else in, not even for a moment, no matter what it costs me. All right?”

Though it hurt her heart, she knew he wouldn’t move. She nodded.

“Leo, I wonder if you would indulge me.” Julian’s voice cut through her misery. “If Jackson administers the punishment, will you be satisfied? He’s serious. He will leave and not come back rather than allow you to touch her. It will more than likely cost me a friendship I would prefer not to lose.”

The slight incline of the dungeon master’s head indicated his assent. “But I expect him to take this seriously. It’s obvious to me he has no control over his subs. He needs to reestablish control or allow them their freedom so they can find more appropriate Masters.”

“How about you let me worry about my wife and my partner and you keep your hands off of her.” Jack took a threatening step toward the other man. “Don’t think I don’t see the way you look at her. You don’t want to punish her. You want to get your hands on her. It’s not going to happen while I’m still breathing. Get me a chair.”

Jack hauled her up and she let him. If this was what it took, she could handle it. Hell, a part of her was already soft and wet. Deep down it was what she had hoped for. She glanced around at the crowd of people watching while Jack was brought a chair. They were going to watch him spank her. She hadn’t really hoped for this part. She felt her skin flush as they watched her.

Julian and Leo seemed particularly interested, but Sally’s head was up, too. There was a strangely familiar face in the back. He had black, fashionably tousled hair and wore trendy clothes. He was young, but he watched the scene before him with a fascination that was hard to miss. An older man in a suit, however, stood right behind the young man, and his disdain shone on his pinched face. It took her back to a time when she saw that look on a lot of people’s faces. She felt seventeen again, with the contempt of her hometown all around her. She’d been young and pregnant, and they’d called her a whore.

“Abigail.” Jack’s voice brought her back to reality. He sat on one of the office chairs from the horny ad execs scene. “Come here.”

She turned away from the man with the disgusted expression. The rest of the room didn’t seem shocked at what was about to happen. They were excited. A thrill went through her. Screw the guy in the back. She wasn’t going to let people like that affect her anymore. She walked to Jack and let him pull her over his lap.

Her pussy throbbed in anticipation. Her mouth went dry as Jack’s big hands stroked up her legs and began to push her skirt up. She was suddenly glad she’d fought Sam on her choice of underwear. He’d pushed for a thong, but she was eager to wear the cute silk bikinis that matched her corset. Now it would give her a bit of modesty.

“What the fuck?” Jack fingered the underwear. “Since when do I allow you to wear panties? Get me a knife.”

So much for modesty. She felt a touch of metal as Jack cut the super-expensive underwear off her body. She watched them fall to the side.

“You’re just running wild aren’t you, baby?

Excerpt:

“I fucking knew it,” I said as soon as Brooklyn opened the door to the gym. I’d knocked, half hoping I was wrong and half hoping I was right, and at least she’d had to unlock the door, but still. Almost ten o’clock at night and she was sitting here alone, the lights from the place a beacon to passersby who were up to no good.

Her mouth hung open as her mind spun for an excuse, but we both knew she was busted. Finally she just shrugged.

“Mm-hm.” I extended the Big Gulp of Mountain Dew I’d stopped to get on the way over.

She gave a little squeal and hugged me, and I decided I’d bring her soda every damn day. “Thank you,” she said, and I wrapped my free arm around her, giving her an extra squeeze and wishing I didn’t have to let go. So far, taking it a day at a time was…torturous. I wanted to ignore the reasons we’d agreed crossing lines would be bad, throw caution to the wind, and kiss the hell out of her.

“Now,” I said—I’d told her I would let her know when I’d kiss her if I had my way, and with her lips so close it was all I could think about. She pulled away, her eyes going wide. Then she ducked her head and swiped a strand of hair behind her ear. Without a word, she headed back to her desk, and I followed. Since I’d put the weirdness in the air I figured it was my job to clear it. “So, how’d the last half of your day go?”

“Not great. My dad and I had another thing because he’s too stubborn to listen to reason.”

“Hmm. Sounds like someone else I know.”

She shot me a dirty look that was ridiculously cute. Now, I thought but forced myself to not say it aloud. She lifted her drink and wrapped her bright pink lips around the straw. “Mmm, this is extra strong, just the way I like it. Are you sure you don’t want any sugary, syrupy goodness?”

I dragged a hand over my face. “You’re killing me on two levels.”

She tipped the soda my way, one eyebrow arching higher than the other, and I slowly leaned forward and took a swig.

“You’re a bad influence,” I said, and a victorious smile spread across her face and lit up her eyes. The smallest things made her so happy, and I wanted to find out more of her favorite things so I could bring them to her and she could tempt me to enjoy them along with her.

Yeah, I’ve officially lost my mind over this girl.

We made small talk as she packed up, although talk with her never seemed small, each word impacting me more than I should let it.

“Aren’t you gonna be up all night now?” I jerked my chin at her nearly empty cup.

“Nah. I’m practically immune to caffeine now. I can drink a Big Gulp and go right to sleep.”

Too bad, because I could think of a lot of things I’d like to stay up all night doing with her. In further proof I’d lost my mind, while some of those things were definitely on the dirty side, if all we ended up doing was talking and laughing until the sun came up, I’d still consider it a win.

I walked with her as she checked the front door and shut off the lights, painfully aware it meant parting ways soon. The closer we got to those last grains of sand slipping through the hourglass, the more leaden my lungs felt. When we were mere steps from the back door, I could hardly stand it, the need to touch her grew so strong.

I wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her back to my chest.

“Shane,” she said, her voice as shaky as my resolve.

“Just let me hold you for a minute.” I lowered my lips to the top of her head, not kissing her like I wanted to but resting them there and breathing her in. My hand hit the top of her jeans and I splayed my fingers, just enough that my thumb and index breached the hem of her shirt. I groaned at the feel of her soft skin and her sharp inhale of breath.

For a moment we remained that way, not talking, barely breathing, desire building and intensifying until it threatened to consume me.

“Why do you have to be all thoughtful and easy to talk to?” she asked, her hand covering mine. “It’d be so much easier if you were the cocky player I pegged you as in the beginning…”

“If it makes you feel better, I’m thinking about how amazing it feels to be pressed up against your ass, and the word peg is giving me dirty flashes of pinning you against the nearest wall.” All true, but now that I’d voiced them they were multiplying, and there was no use trying to hide my body’s reaction. My hard-on strained against my zipper, the tight fabric getting more uncomfortable by the second.

“Not helping,” she said, the rasped words only sending more desire pumping through my body.

“And you’re sure we can’t—”

“I’m sure. I’m not going to pretend I’m not tempted, but nothing’s changed. I still have a boyfriend and will be leaving at the end of the summer, and you’re still focused on training for your next fight—a fight you have pretty much everything riding on. The timing’s just…” Her chest rose and fell with her shallow breaths. “Shane, I just can’t.”

“I know,” I said, and using every ounce of my willpower, I dropped my hand and took a large step back.

Her gaze stayed straight ahead as we pushed through the exit, and she remained very methodical as she climbed inside her car and fastened her seatbelt. I leaned my forehead against the cool metal of the top of her Mustang, not that it helped—at this point, only one thing would, and it was the one thing I couldn’t have.

I wanted to look down at her one last time before I wished her a good night, closed her car door, and let her go. But I knew if I did, I wouldn’t let her go.

So I closed her door, then spun on my heel and climbed on my bike, and watched in agony as she drove away from me.

EXCERPT:

Hugh Johnson knew within a second of entering his bungalow that somebody else was inside. First, his hound dog didn’t bother to meet him at the door. Second, a vaguely familiar scent of wild bluebells wafted in the air.

He tossed his keys near the bowl sitting on an entryway table his mama had insisted he own and kept walking down the hallway, striding into his comfortable living room with its floor-to-ceiling windows that showcased trees and a bubbling brook outside. There he stopped cold. “Ellie,” he murmured, his normally relaxed body going on full alert as he took in the small woman lounging on his worn couch with the dog’s head in her lap.

She smiled pretty pink lips, her blue eyes sparkling behind wire-rimmed glasses as she stroked the dog’s head. “Your door was unlocked.”

Heisenberg groaned happily beneath her palm, keeping his eyes closed in pure bliss.

Hugh had the oddest desire to change places with the dog. “Not much crime out here in eastern Kentucky,” he murmured, studying the woman he hadn’t seen in…what? Ten years? “You’re all grown up, Eleanor.”

“I should hope so.” Even though she was wearing a black pencil skirt and fancy silk shirt, she’d kicked her shoes off and had her legs, her long and bare legs, on the hunting and fishing magazines scattered across his coffee table. She’d shoved a tattered and well-read Steve Berry thriller to the side.

Her ankles were crossed, and her toenails were painted with purple sparkles. Her blonde hair reached her shoulders in the wild mass he remembered. “You’re looking…good,” she murmured, a slight pink filling her cheeks.

He’d always liked how easily she blushed. Then he glanced down at his ripped jeans and threadbare Metallica T-shirt. “I’m on vacation.”

“It’s over,” she said softly, her gaze sobering.

My Review:

Blaze Erupting is the newest work from author Rebecca Zanetti and is a Scorpius Syndrome/Brigade crossover of sorts. It’s also the very fist 2018 1,001 Dark Nights release! I always love diving back into Ms. Zanetti’s post-apocalyptic world and this was yet another kick ass story.  I loved Hugh and Ellie so much!

Who doesn’t love a rekindled flame/second chance romance? I know I certainly do and when the hero is sexy, a big gruff with a loyal heart and a soft side like Hugh and the heroine is smart, sassy, and no-nonsense like Ellie is, this story was a total win from start to finish.  Of course not only does Ms. Zanetti deliver two dynamic characters, she also delivers danger and a high stakes plot that kept me glued to every word! I simply could not put it down!

Whether you’re new to Rebecca Zanetti’s work or you’re a seasoned fan, I know you will love Blaze Erupting as much as I did!

My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards.
We met at a wedding—him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s. Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction.
I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter. Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us. His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off. But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me.
We ended up back in my hotel room. The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number.
I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby. Our attraction hadn’t dulled one bit. After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time. So I left him with my mother’s—she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage—and flew back home.
I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner. The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city. He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems.
Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose?
Nothing, I thought.
It’s just sex, not love.
But you know what they say about the best laid plans…

My Review:

Sex, Not Love is the newest work from author Vi Keeland, an author whose work over the years I have loved and with each release I vow that one was my favorite.  Well, I’ll say it again, but this time I may just mean it.  This story is my hands down all time favorite from her.

Why is it my favorite?  It could be the fun and sexy banter between these two dynamic characters.  It could be the loving relationship Nat shares with her step-daughter and the obstacles she has had to overcome in her life. It could be Hunter’s sexy charm and tender heart.  It most decidedly is a combination of all of those things.  But that’s what Vi Keeland does best.  She delivers stories and characters that resonate with the reader.  Characters that have so may layers to their personalities that you can’t help but connect with them.

Both Hunter and Nat are equally vulnerable and strong.  They both have pasts that have led them to be the way they are today.  It’s both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time and form the very first page, you can’t help but pray these two end up together. They have a rough road ahead of them when their story begins and it’s not one without some hurt and tears along the way, but it ends up just as perfectly and beautifully as I knew it would be.

…and now I’m in serious book hangover mode!

Thank you, Ms. Keeland, for once again delivering a book that will stay with me.

Loving her is the biggest fight of his life…

Home from the Marines, Noah Cortez has a secret he doesn’t want his oldest friend, Kristina Moore, to know. Which is why Warrior Fight Club sounds so good.

Kristina loves teaching, but she wants more out of life. She wants Noah—the boy she’s crushed on and waited for. Except Noah is all man now—in ways both oh so good and troubling, too. Still, she wants who he’s become—every war-hardened inch. And when they finally stop fighting their attraction, it’s everything Kristina never dared hope for.

But Noah is secretly spiraling, and when he lashes out, it threatens what he and Kristina have found. The brotherhood of the fight club helps him confront his demons, but only Noah can convince the woman he loves that he’s finally ready to fight for everything.

Cover designer: Letitia Hasser, RBA designs
Cover Model: Lucas Garcez
Cover Photography: Sven Jacobsen

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

Growing up, the three of us were friends.
He was the nerd.
I was the playboy.
She was the beauty.

Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.
He lied.

I went off to college, and he got the girl.
Amber never knew how I felt.
They were together for years—before he broke her heart.

Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.
When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Still reeling from her breakup, she’d sworn off men.
One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She’d hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.
Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy—curiosity.
Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.
She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend— me. But she considered me off-limits—and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)
Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.
When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she got the surprise of her life to see me standing there—with an offer I hoped she wouldn’t refuse.

HIS CURSE TO BEAR

Enigmatic and strong-willed werewolf Kane LaRue realizes the benefits of doing things in a pack. But not this time. He feels responsible for the additional terror a Voodoo priestess has leveled on his family, and has vowed to stop at nothing to end her reign of terror. He almost had Delphine once, and this time, he’s promised himself that he will succeed in wiping her from the face of the earth—or die trying. But when her followers almost destroy him, Kane is forced to accept the help of a stunning and fiercely independent woman who makes Kane re-evaluate what’s important…and listen to his heart.

HER WILL TO SURVIVE

Elise is a survivor, but because of the tragic events of her past, she has chosen to live out her days in the bayou, helping the animals she loves and giving back as much as she can to the community that literally saved her life. When a gorgeous dog she tries to save turns out to be so much more, Elise is compelled to let someone in—and faces things about herself she isn’t entirely comfortable with. But the breathtakingly handsome shifter makes her feel things she hasn’t experienced in ages, and she soon realizes that she needs Kane’s help as much as he needs hers. Together, they are unstoppable, and if they’re lucky, they just might rid the world of the evil that has plagued New Orleans for much too long.

Excerpt:

Vicious growls yanked her from sleep. Elise sat up so fast, she knocked Mr. Darcy off her stomach. A look outside showed a pack of dogs attacking an animal.

She rushed to the door and banged her hands on the doorjamb to break up the fight, but none of the animals heard her over the commotion. Then she spotted black fur and realized the pack was attacking the black dog she’d seen before.

The danger didn’t even enter her mind when she grabbed the shotgun from atop her fridge and rushed from the house into the rain. She yelled, but nothing seemed to get the dogs’ attention. Then she fired off a shot into the ground, not to hit the animals, but to hopefully scare them off.

It worked. At least, it did at first. Then a few of the dogs returned to the black one.

“Get out of here!” she yelled and aimed the gun towards the pack, firing into the ground again.

She didn’t want to kill any of the animals, but she would if they didn’t give her a choice. Thankfully, after the second shot, they ran off into the woods.

Elise shook the water from her face but kept her gaze on the woods in case the pack returned. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the black dog collapse. She’d known he was large, but up close, he was massive. By the look of him, he had some wolf in him.

Yet the longer she looked, the more wolf she saw in his features. But that couldn’t be right. Wolves weren’t native to the area. After her months spent at a wolf conservatory, she knew the animals, and she was looking at a damn wolf.

After several minutes of quiet, she glanced around for any sign of the others. The animal was unconscious, his breathing shallow, and wounds all over him.

She couldn’t leave him out there since she needed to tend to his injuries, but getting a wolf into her house and the room she worked out of would be difficult. Not to mention that if he woke, she might not make it out of the situation alive.

Since she didn’t know the extent of his wounds, she didn’t want to give him a tranquilizer. Which left her few options.

Elise was about to go in and call someone for help when she happened to glance at the water. The rain had caused her to miss the slight ripples, but she spotted the eyes of a gator as it swam toward them. She glanced at the wolf and saw that his back legs were in the bayou.

“Well, shit,” she said and set down her gun to grab hold of him beneath his shoulders to pull his body out of the water and safely onto land, far enough away that hopefully, the alligator wouldn’t follow. She saw the blood pooling from wounds on his back leg that had filled the water with smells the gator couldn’t resist.

She took a chance and continued backing up toward her porch, glancing over her shoulder to check on her progress every few seconds—not to mention keeping an eye on the wolf while praying he didn’t wake and bite her.

When she finally reached the side door that she had put in to lead into the second bedroom that she’d converted for her work, she gently released the animal and leaned against the house for a second to catch her breath before rushing to get her gun.

She was soaked—with both rain and sweat. The wolf was incredibly heavy. She had no idea how she was going to get him up the steps and into the house without waking him.

After taking a few gulping breaths to calm her racing heart, she knew she had to do something before the wolf woke. Elise opened the side door and leaned her gun against the wall as she looked around for anything she could use to get him inside.

Her shoes slipped on the floor, causing her to bang into the stainless steel table. She winced and pushed the button on the side to lower it to the floor. Then she rushed back outside. It would be so much easier if someone were there to help her carry the animal inside.

She was reaching for the wolf when a howl split the air. Elise stood frozen, chills racing over her skin. A moment later, several more howls joined the first. By the sound of them, the pack had surrounded her house.

Swallowing, she lowered her gaze to the animal at her feet. This wasn’t her first time working on wild creatures. She’d gone to Montana to help the local wolf sanctuary with the animals for several summers, also helping the ones roaming the wilderness.

But she was never alone.

After so many years working on farm animals and pets, Elise found her hands shaking. She fisted them and took a deep breath. She could do this, but she had to move quickly because when the animal woke, he would tear through everything.

She bent to grab the animal when the fur began to recede—replaced by skin. Before her eyes, the black wolf changed into a man.

Startled, Elise stepped backward. Her heel caught the edge of the steps, and she began to fall. She waved her arms to right herself, but the next thing she knew, she was on the ground with rain pounding her face.

She hurriedly rolled onto her side and looked at the wolf/man. Thankfully, he was still unconscious.

A howl, closer than any of the others, caused her to jerk in fear. She jumped up and hooked her arms beneath the man’s arms and unceremoniously pulled him inside the house.
