About When the Lights Go Out

Hardcover: 336 pages

Publisher: Park Row; Original edition (September 4, 2018)

A woman is forced to question her own identity in this riveting and emotionally charged thriller by the blockbuster bestselling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica

Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she’s ever known.

Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie’s mind. Her judgment is blurred, her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what she’s only imagined.

Meanwhile, twenty years earlier and two hundred and fifty miles away, another woman’s split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie’s secret past. Has Jessie’s whole life been a lie or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

“Kubica brilliantly unravels the lives of two women in this tense and haunting tale of identity and deceit. WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT will keep you questioning everything-and everyone-until the riveting conclusion. A twisty, captivating, edge-of-your-seat read.” –Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author of ALL THE MISSING GIRLS

Excerpt:

I keep track of the sleepless nights in the notched lines beneath my eyes, like the annual rings of a tree. One wrinkle for each night that I don’t sleep.  I stare at myself in the mirror each day, counting them all. This morning there were four. The surface effects of insomnia are even worse than what’s going on on the inside.  My eyes are red and swollen. My eyelids droop. Overnight, wrinkles appear by the masses, while I lay in bed counting sheep. I could go to the clinic and request something else to help me sleep.  Some more of the clonazepam. But with the pills in my system, I slept right on through Mom’s death. I don’t want to think about what else I’d miss.

At McDonalds, I’m asked if I want ketchup with my fries, but I can only stare at the worker dumbly because what I heard was, It’s messed up when boats capsize, and I nod lamely because it is disastrous and sad, and yet so out of left field I can’t respond with words.

It’s only when he drops a stack of ketchup packets on my tray that my brain makes the translation, too late it seems because I hate ketchup.  I dump them on the table when I go, the mother lode for someone who likes it. On the way out the door I trip, because coordination is also effected by a lack of sleep.

Two hours ago I dragged my heavy body from bed after another sleepless night, and now I stand in the center of Mom and my house, deciding which of our belongings to take and which to leave.  I can’t stand to stay here much longer, a decision I’ve come to quickly over the last four days. I’ve spoken to a realtor already, figured out next steps. First I’m to pack up what I want to keep, and then everything else will be sold in an estate sale before some junk removal service tosses the rest of our stuff in the trash.

Then some other family will move into the only home I’ve ever known.

I’m eyeing the sofa, wondering if I should take it or leave it, when the phone rings.  “Hello?” I ask.

A voice on the other end informs me that she’s calling from the financial aid office at the college.  “There’s a problem with your application,” she says to me.

“What problem?” I ask the woman on the phone, afraid I’m about to be cited for tax evasion.  It’s a likely possibility; I’d left blank every question on the FAFSA form than asked about adjusted gross income and tax returns.  I might have lied on the application too. There was a question that asked if both of my parents were deceased. I said yes to that, though I don’t know if it’s true.

Is my father dead?

On the other end of the line, the woman asks me to verify my social security number for her and I do.  “That’s what I have,” she says, and I ask, “Then what’s the problem? Has my application been denied?” My heart sinks.  How can that be? It’s only a community college. It’s not like I registered for Yale or Harvard.

“I’m sure it’s just a weird mix-up with vital statistics,” she says.

“What mix-up?” I ask, feeling relieved for a mix-up as opposed to a denied application.  A mix-up can be fixed.

“It’s the strangest thing,” she says.  “There was a death certificate on file for a Jessica Sloane, from seventeen years ago.  With your birthdate and your social security number. By the looks of this, Ms. Sloane,” she says, and I amend Jessie, because Ms. Sloane is Mom.  “By the looks of this, Jessie,” she says, and the words that follow punch me so hard in the gut they make it almost impossible to breathe.  “By the looks of this, you’re already dead.”

And then she laughs as if somehow or other this is funny.

*

Today I’m looking for a new place to live.  Staying in our old home is no longer a viable option because of the residual ghosts of Mom that remain in every corner of the home.  The smell of her Crabtree & Evelyn hand cream that fills the bathroom. The feel of the velvet lined compartments in the mahogany dresser.  The chemo caps. The cartons of Ensure on the refrigerator shelf.

I perch in the back seat of a Kia Soul, trying hard not to think too much about the call from the financial aid office.  This is easier said than done. Just thinking about it makes my stomach hurt. A mix-up, the woman claimed, but still, it’s hard to grapple with the words you and dead in the same sentence.  Though I try to, I can’t push them from my mind.  The way she and I left things, I’m to provide a copy of my social security card to the college before they’ll take another look at my application for a loan, which is a problem because I don’t have the first clue where the card is.  But it’s more than that too. Because the woman also told me about some death index my name was found on. A death index.  My name on a database maintained by the Social Security Administration of millions of people who have died, nullifying their social security numbers so that no one else can use them, so that I can’t use my own social security number.  Because, according to the Social Security Administration, I’m dead.

Each day with Damien is a miracle, each moment with our children a gift. And yet I cannot escape the growing sense that a storm is gathering, threatening to pull me away, to rip us apart. To drag me down, once again, into a darkness to which I swore never to return.

I have to fight it—I know that. And I am waging the battle with of all my heart. But it is Damien who is my strength, and we both know that the only way to push away the darkness is for him to fold me in his arms and claim me completely. EXCERPT:

I’ve just popped a cube of Wisconsin Cheddar into my mouth when my phone chimes, signaling a call from Damien. “Hey,” I say through a mouthful of cheese. “Are you in the car?”

“Actually, I’m stuck here. It’s been one of those days.”

“Oh.” Disappointment crashes over me, along with the fear that my plans for a long weekend are going to be swept away in a flood of work crises. I draw in a breath and catch Jamie’s eye, her expression sympathetic. “Well, Jamie’s here. She can watch the kids, and I could come stay the night at the Tower Apartment.” Stark International is based in Stark Tower, one of LA’s downtown high rises. Damien’s private office takes up half the top floor, and his—now our—private apartment takes up the other half of the space.

“That’s tempting, but no. I need…”

As he trails off, that knot of worry in my stomach starts to tighten. “What?” I whisper, hoping that now, finally, he’ll tell me what’s the matter.

“I need to deal with this.”

“Damien, please—”

“I’ll be home as soon as I can. I promise. I love you. Kiss the girls for me. And I’ll see you later tonight.”

I hesitate, waiting to hear those familiar words: Until then, imagine me, touching you. But there’s only silence, and I swallow rising tears. “I love you, too. Do you want to talk to La—” I begin, but he’s already clicked off.

I draw a breath and stare at my phone before lifting my head and meeting Jamie’s eyes.

“I’m sorry,” she says. “But honestly, Nicholas, the man pretty much runs the entire known universe. Of course there’s stuff on his mind.”

She’s right, and I draw in a breath, suck it up, and force myself into a good mood as we change into swimsuits, then take the kids onto the back patio.

LOVE ONLINE LIVE NOW

Synopsis:

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy STANDALONE novel.

We met in the least likely of places. It started out innocently enough. I was “ScreenGod” and she was “Montana,” but of course, those weren’t our actual names, just the virtual cloaks we hid behind.

Logging in at night and talking to her was my escape—my sanctuary.

Her real name was Eden, I’d soon come to find out.

From the first time we connected online, I found myself transfixed.

She was an addiction.

At first, we knew nothing about each other’s real identities…and she was adamant that we keep things that way. Anonymity had no effect on our unstoppable chemistry, though. If anything, it allowed us to open up even more in ways we may not have otherwise.

Eden was funny, intelligent, gorgeous—everything I’d ever wanted in a woman.

But I couldn’t really have her.

I had accepted things would have to stay the way they were—until the day I found a clue that led me straight to her.

So I took a chance.

And that was when our love story really began.

Love Online EXCERPT teaser

Needing a few seconds to prepare, I closed my eyes the moment I knew he was about to turn on the camera.

I don’t know why I was so afraid to see him. Maybe I was worried his looks would somehow change the way I viewed him. I hated that I’d even had that thought. I didn’t want to be unattracted to him physically because I was so very drawn to him in every other way. Shouldn’t those be the ways that mattered? I was scared I would somehow feel differently about him, and he deserved better than to be judged on his physical appearance.

“You can open your eyes,” he said.

My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest.

Here goes.

One, two, three…

When I saw him right in front of me, my mouth fell open.

Oh.

Oh my.

Oh wow.

Big, glowing eyes. Perfect nose. Stubbled, angular jaw. Full lips. Strong arms. I just kept blinking because I couldn’t believe my eyes. He looked like a model or a movie star. A rush of insecurity hit me.

Is this a joke?

No, it wasn’t.

It was really him.

Ryder.

Oh my God.

The lust consuming me made me feel almost guilty. But I was so damn relieved that he was truly as beautiful on the outside as I believed him to be on the inside. He was almost too beautiful, if there were such a thing.

He looked nothing like the vague image I’d formed in my head, which was sort of like a silhouette without a clear face but with a brown beard, kind of like a hipster. Not sure why I’d pictured him like that. It was kind of funny how off base I was. This was not what I’d been expecting. Because how could someone so thoughtful, attentive, creative, and considerate be so strikingly handsome that he made me speechless? And it was clear now that his sexy voice absolutely fit him.

“You’re…” I hesitated.

“Oh shit.” He laughed. “What are you thinking?”

“No. No, no, no. Nothing bad at all. I just don’t even know how to articulate it. You’re…beautiful, Ryder. Absolutely beautiful.”

He let out a breath. “And you’re…handsome, Eden. Very handsome.” His impish grin was so sexy.

I chuckled. “I know beautiful is an odd term for a man, but you are. All this time you’ve been hiding from me when you’re drop-dead gorgeous. Why?”

“You really did think I was ashamed of my looks, huh?”

“Well, I’d be lying if I said that didn’t cross my mind. I wondered if there was something you were self-conscious about. That always made me a little sad. But it never mattered to me, because I’ve been connecting with you on a deeper level.”

“I think that’s exactly why I didn’t want to change things,” he said. “Why fix something if it ain’t broken?” When I fell silent, he asked, “What are you thinking?”

A nervous energy overtook me. “Nothing. I’m…still just taking you in.”

“Okay. Let me know when you’re done so I can stop sucking in my abs.”

Excerpt:

I opened my eyes, but I didn’t see the sun. I saw a form… a shape of a man. The features blurred, but I knew the man. It was him.

The Prince….

But that also didn’t make sense. None of this made sense. Confusion crept into the fuzz crowding my thoughts. Something was off. I tried to lift my hand, but my arm felt like it was weighted down. Something was wrong, very badly wrong, and I needed to remember—

Sleep.

The desire to slip away hit me hard and fast, obliterating the confusion and consciousness, and I slept. I slept for what felt like years and then I heard a steady beeping. It intruded on wherever I was, becoming so loud, so obnoxious to me, that I had to pay attention to it. A part of my consciousness zeroed in on the sound, clung to it, and I followed it back, tethering myself to the rhythm. With each passing second, my surroundings became clearer. Footsteps. I heard footsteps. Whispers. There was the sound of hushed voices. I dragged in a deep breath, and a shock hit my system. The breath hurt. Like my chest and ribs were too tight and a simple deep breath was too much to take—

Mom.

I saw her in my mind, as clear as day.

I saw her lying on her back in the darkness, her eyes wide and fixed on mine. There was nothing behind those eyes. No life. Nothing.

The beeping sound sped up.

The horrifying image of my mom faded like smoke, replaced by luminous skin and bloody smiles and taunts and…

Pools of blood. Actual pools of it. The ruby-red liquid spilled across stone, forming rivulets that ran between the spacing in the pavers. Why had there been so much blood? A vague feeling of wet warmth bubbling up my throat and choking me swept through me.

“Bri? Are you awake? Brighton?”

Tiffany Blues by M.J. Rose…Excerpt Blog Tour Stop

NYT bestselling author, M. J. Rose crafts a dazzling Jazz Age jewel–a novel of ambition, betrayal, and passion with TIFFANY BLUES. TIFFANY BLUES is now available! Check out the tour below, and pick up your copy of TIFFANY BLUES today!

TIFFANY BLUES Synopsis:

New York, 1924. Twenty‑four‑year‑old Jenny Bell is one of a dozen burgeoning artists invited to Louis Comfort Tiffany’s prestigious artists’ colony. Gifted and determined, Jenny vows to avoid distractions and romantic entanglements and take full advantage of the many wonders to be found at Laurelton Hall.

But Jenny’s past has followed her to Long Island. Images of her beloved mother, her hard-hearted stepfather, waterfalls, and murder, and the dank hallways of Canada’s notorious Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women overwhelm Jenny’s thoughts, even as she is inextricably drawn to Oliver, Tiffany’s charismatic grandson.

As the summer shimmers on, and the competition between the artists grows fierce as they vie for a spot at Tiffany’s New York gallery, a series of suspicious and disturbing occurrences suggest someone knows enough about Jenny’s childhood trauma to expose her.

Supported by her closest friend Minx Deering, a seemingly carefree socialite yet dedicated sculptor, and Oliver, Jenny pushes her demons aside. Between stolen kisses and stolen jewels, the champagne flows and the jazz plays on until one moonless night when Jenny’s past and present are thrown together in a desperate moment, that will threaten her promising future, her love, her friendships, and her very life.

Excerpt:

“May I see?” A man’s voice came from behind me. In its timbre, I saw a flash of forest green. The color of holly in the summer when its leaves are at their glossy best.

He looked to be about my age, not striking except for the excitement in his warm brown eyes as he glanced from me back to my drawing.

And then he tipped my pad toward himself.

“Hey,” I said, pulling the pad back.

“No, no, don’t. let me look. These are so good. You’ve captured so much more of him in one drawing than I can with this,” the man said, pointing to the camera slung around his neck.

Before I could stop him again, he took the sketch pad from my hand and was rifling through my series of drawings.

“You have absolutely no right—” I tried to grab the sketch pad back, but he held tight.

“Please say you’ll come to the office with me. I want to show these to my boss. I’m sure he’d want to buy at least one from you.”

“The office? Your boss?”

“I work at the New York Herald Tribune.”

My heartbeat quickened. “No, no,” I said. “I have to go. I have class. And you are being amazingly rude!” I held out my hand for the sketch pad.

He returned it with a sheepish grin. “I’m sorry,” he said.

I slipped the pad into my satchel and prepared to go.

“But I’m certain the paper would—”

I shook my head. “I’m really late and not at all interested.” I walked away, not waiting to hear the rest of what he had to say.

My last run-in with newspapers and reporters had been almost nine years earlier. Enough time to give me perspective but not enough to take away the sting or to erase the memories. No matter how kind this man’s eyes looked, he was obviously a reporter, and I knew from experience that reporters could not be trusted. The press was out for one thing only: the story that would give them a headline to sell copies.

I hurried westward, half walking, half running, crossing Sixth and then Seventh Avenue, and finally coming to a stop at number 215 West Fifty-seventh Street. I took the steps two at a time, pulled open the door, and took a deep breath.

I was safe3 in the hallowed halls of the art school that had been training men and women form the last fifty years. The combined scent of oil paints, turpentine, primer, clay, wood chips, marble dust, and cigarettes was an aroma like no other. It could not be reproduced in even the finest perfumery.

I walked up two flights to the classroom, laid out my supplies, and banished all thoughts of the scene on the street and the rude reporter. Instead, I threw myself into trying to capture the pose of the current female model on the dais.

About THE LAST LETTER (Coming 2/26/2019):

Beckett,

If you’re reading this, well, you know the “last-letter” drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there were any chance you could have saved me, you would have.

I need one thing from you: Get out of the army and get to Telluride.

My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.

And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

Please don’t make her go through it alone.

EXCERPT:

Did it make you a bad friend if you were completely, a hundred percent envious of that friend? Yes? No? Kind of?

I figured it was somewhere in between.

That’s what I was mulling over as I watched Ivy Morgan brush thick, red curls over her shoulder, laughing at something her boyfriend Ren Owens had said to her.

At least I wasn’t envious of that—their love. Okay, well, that wasn’t entirely true. Pretty sure anyone who was as single as me would be envious of all that warm and fuzzy that was passed back and forth with each long look or casual brush of skin. The two could barely tear their gazes away from one another to eat the dinner we’d grabbed at the cute little diner inside the shopping center on Prytania Street.

I honest to God couldn’t be happier for them. They’d been through so much—way more than two people should ever have to go through to be together, and here they were, stronger and more in love than ever, and they deserved that happiness.

But their epic love story wasn’t the source of a current case of the green-eye monster that was sitting on my shoulder.

Ivy was just such a… badass.

Even right now, relaxed in the chair, surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights with her hand in Ren’s and her belly full of a cheeseburger deluxe and crinkle fries and half of my tater tots, she could kick ass and take names along with addresses, telephone numbers, and social security numbers.

If the proverbial poo hit the fan, you called Ivy or Ren.

If you needed to know what streets Royal intersected with, you called… me. Or if you needed coffee or fresh beignets but were currently busy, you know, saving the world, you’d call me.

The three of us were all members of the Order, a widespread organization that was literally the only thing that stood between mankind and complete, utter enslavement and destruction by the fae. And not the super cute fae found in Disney movies or some crap like that. Humans thought they were on top of the food chain. They were wrong. The fae were.

The only thing pop culture got right about the fae was their slightly pointy ears. That was it. The fae were more than just beings from another world—the Otherworld—they were capable of glamouring their appearance to blend in with humans. But all Order members, even me, were warded at birth against the glamour. We saw through the human façade to the creature that lurked beneath.

My Review:

The Prince is the newest release from author Jennifer L. Armentrout and is part of the 2018 1,001 Dark Nights collection.  I adore Ms. Armentrout’s writing and was so excited to get my hands on the story one of the characters I’ve been anticipating from her Wicked series.  Well, it was just as incredible as I had imaged it would be.  I loved every second of this read!

From the very beginning we are transported to the world of the fae in New Orleans.  With a setting like New Orleans, it’s easy to believe anything paranormal is possible and with the unique spin Ms. Armentrout puts on these beings, you can’t help but be sucked in to each page.  Our heroine, Brighton, is a total badass who isn’t afraid to fight what she believes is right and I loved her for that.  The Prince, Caden, is equally as amazing a character with so many facets to his personality.  I knew I would grow to love him (and boy, did I ever!).  Brighton and Caden’s journey is filled with danger, twists and turns, and emotion.  It was simply incredible!

I also loved seeing more of Tink, one of the most fun characters ever! I will say the end is a bit of a doozy (in a good way!) and, to me, that made this novella even more enjoyable.

Whether you’re already a fan of Ms. Armentrout and her writing, or this is your first taste, I know you’ll love it as much as I did.

“Fascinating…an enchanting glimpse of Jazz Age New York.” —Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train and A Piece of the World

The New York Times bestselling author of The Library of Light and Shadow crafts a dazzling Jazz Age jewel—a novel of ambition, betrayal, and passion about a young painter whose traumatic past threatens to derail her career at a prestigious summer artists’ colony run by Louis Comfort Tiffany of Tiffany & Co. fame. “[M.J. My Review:

I am a huge fan of M.J. Rose and everything she writes.  No one can transport me to another time and place while reading like she does.  I always know when I pick up one of her stories I will be immersed into a world filled with lush detail, beautiful emotion, and mystery.  Tiffany Blues is yet another shining example of what Ms. Rose does so well.  I loved every single minute of this read.

Jenny’s journey is one filled with love and loss, pain and tenderness, and ultimately one of self discovery.  Her journey takes her from a painful past to a dream-come-true spot in Louis Comfort Tiffany’s artist colony and along the way we see what life must have been like back in the 1920’s.  Few things are as magical as seeing the past through Ms. Rose’s eyes and experiencing it with Jenny, an incredible and dynamic heroine, was even more special.  Jenny is also a mysterious character with a past that proves to haunt her even into this newest chapter in her life.

The cast of characters in Jenny’s life are equally as interesting.  Her eccentric best friend and the men in her life made this story even more enjoyable.

Adding to the layers of the story is a very real life mystery.  A fire destroyed much of the colony Ms. Rose has Jenny is studying at and the way Ms. Rose incorporates the fiction with reality is superb.

Whether you’re already a fan of Ms. Rose, or this is the first you’re hearing of her, I know you will love Tiffany Blues as much as I did.  It’s a definite must read!

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang…Review

Synopsis:

A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there’s not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases–a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice–with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan–from foreplay to more-than-missionary position…

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but to crave all the other things he’s making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic…

My Review:

.
The Kiss Quotient is a breath of fresh air. After reading hundreds and hundreds of romances, I’ll admit I search out those stories that will still make my toes curl and get me giddy for the process of two people falling in love. In The Kiss Quotient, some of the best tropes are here: lessons in seduction, diverse characters and cultures, escort. But the shining star here is the very real portrayal of a heroine on the Austism Spectrum. You see, Stella has Asperger’s, a social disorder that finds her in her element at work as a numbers wizard but completely out of her element with anything that comes close to dating or sex. And that right there is the magic: a heroine whose differences allow her to shine and in the process teach us all something about the search for love.
.
Stella is nothing if not goal-oriented. With the pressures of an overbearing mother, Stella decides to take the bull by the horns and seeks the help of Michael Phan, a Swedish Vietnamese male escort, for the source of all her knowledge on how to become good at the finer points of male/female interaction, namely how to behave properly and seductively so she can land a guy. It’s the main area of her life that is lacking, according to her parents, society, and, if she’s honest, herself.
.
But from the beginning, there’s something special between Stella and Michael, who are really more than business from the start. He’s not merely a male escort—in fact, he’s put his life on hold for those who depend on him, and he’s become disillusioned with the whole thing, until Stella. He’s patient and doesn’t put on a front with her. And in return, Stella’s blunt honesty becomes an openness with Michael. What follows is a lovely, refreshing contemporary romance that’s sexy and heartfelt. Best of all, Stella’s disorder doesn’t make her hard to relate to—if anything, it shows women everywhere what it’s like when women of any size, shape, struggle, or in between finds love. Stella’s Asperger’s has her feeling many of the same out of control feelings that we all feel when it comes to attraction, only heightened, and Michael is her perfect match. I love Helen Hoang’s unique perspective, and The Kiss Quotient is one of the best romances of 2018.
